What to do with my hanging fushia?

I planted a hanging basket with fushia starts last spring and it actually grew pretty well. Now I'm wondering what to do with it. I'll overwinter it in the garage to keep it protected. Do I trim it back? If so, when? How much water should I give it over the winter? Hmmm

Mary, my fuschia has long since bit the dust.

Check out the following link. It's a question and answer website dealing with over-wintering geraniums and fuschia. You should be able to find some answers there. I hope it helps! :)

Over-wintering geraniums and fuschia

:)

I think (JMHO) you should cut it back, bring it in to your house and give it a window to sit by until warm weather comes back. Treat it like a houseplant but don't expect big blooms indoors. They can get messy in the house too so cut it back by 1/3.
I have geraniums that I carry over. Some of them I repot and bring in the house. They love a warm sunny window although they'll hang on with low light, just won't bloom.
The rest of the geraniums either go in the basement or in the garage in a dark corner. I used to (pre- kids:) take them out of the pots, shake all the dirt off & hang them upside down. It worked but I found they come back if I just take off the dead leaves and leave them in their pots.

Thanks for the info Buds. I'm looking at it through the window right now and it looks really pathetic. It's been in the upper 20's at night for the last week. Brrrr! Too cold for my NW bones.

My fuschia has been cut back and given a sunny window, but it is not thriving. I didn't realize that it could have, perhaps should have, been given a rest. It has new growth, but they're not hardy new leaves, they seem fragile. I'll keep an eye on it.

The weather is changing here, it's getting colder. I just came back from an extended weekend in Florida. We were at WDW and also went to visit friends and we looked at some retirement home options. I will have an orange tree someday!

I have one Christmas cactus with flowers, others are beginning to bud. Each plant seems to have it's own personality and requirements, some like more water and some less, and it looks like I'm losing one. Does anyone else have such mixed results with this plant?

Bobbi, Christmas Cactus were a very hot topic last year at this time. I was trying to search for some of the threads on them, but for some reason search wouldn't take me back further than a month. I'll try again.

If I remember correctly, Mamu has a giant Christmas cactus, and is quite knowledgable about them. Hopefully she'll see your question (or I'll let her know about it), and can give you some advice.

BTW, I hope you do indeed get your orange tree someday! :) :)
