What to do with excessively noisy neighbors?

Inspired by all the ?'s about room noise.

We've all had the noise coming from "next door". But I'm talking about that 1 time that you where at your wits end about the crazy folks next to you. Maybe the baby was sick? Maybe the parents where louder than the kids? Maybe the teens where left alone too much? Maybe the honeymoon just wasn't over. ;) Maybe the parents lost control of the kids years ago?

How did you handle it? What works best? If you have a great idea, solution please respond. No one seems to know how to handle these things, and usually you just keep living, and start counting the days, till you are ready to go home.

Guess I'll start:

Poly = tokelua = we took all extra pillows and placed up against connecting door, and the next day the mousekeepers put them away. We repeated the action, but mousekeeping were in the room the next day, and told us " we hear why you did that, so we are leaving them up for you". We did call the desk and and were told we could move, but we only had a few nites left, Didn't want to "pack up" in the long run we should of moved it got worse. They started there day at 4am and ended about 1am. Parents dealt with there kids by going out on balcony and locking the door with kids in room, for some "us" time. :earseek: (But the kids were usually just as loud when they were in the room. ) I finally went out there and said " I think they just broke something, you better check, and can you have them keep the connecting door shut, its much too loud with it open. Parents looked at me mortified and ran in room, not a word. Now this is abouslutely the ONLY time I have ever felt compleded to say a word to a neighbor, other than "good morning, etc..."

All in all this is the easist way to quickly ruin your trip. Please someone give us the correct way to handle these situations. :hyper:

Thanks for any responses! ::MickeyMo

We have always been very lucky and never even hear our neighbors at Disney. If I experienced your situation, I think I would knock on the neighbor's door while the loud noise was happening and politely explain that the noise is excessive and I would appreciate it if they could keep the sounds down especially early in the morning and late at night when we are trying to sleep. If that didn't work I would call management (especially if it is 1:00 am or 4:am) and ask if someone could come up and talk to the people for you. If I couldn't stand it anymore, I guess I would move to another room.

The quickest & most effective way to put a lid on noise in any hotel/motel is to call the front desk and ask them to send security. One knock on the offender's door by someone from security should be the end of it. Why should the burden be on you to move?

Last year on our trip to the Polynesian, the poeple in the next room were extremely loud. It sounded like they were having a party. I didn't get upset until it was after midnight. Then I called the front desk and complained. They sent someone up and the noise settled down. I am a light sleeper (the curse of a mom!) and I did hear them most of the night, but they were not as loud as before. AS long as they were sorta quiet and the kids slept, it was ok.

If we are being too noisy (both of us are hard of hearing) please knock and tell me and I will do my best to tone it down. I love the new tv's with the visible volume control as it gives me some sense of how high the tv is and blessings upon whomever invented closed caption. I always tell them at the front desk so they feel comfortable calling us if necessary. Has seldom been necessary. I have found the Disney rooms to be very well insulated but then, as I have said, I cannot hear anything anyway. Touchdown, front side, teens playing ball, no problem for us! LOL

Last December at the YC was the one and only time in 9 years this was an issue. Neighbors were a mom & dad with 2 little boys. I have a boy and I know boys play, boys make noise and then, if they are little, like these kids were, they go to sleep. Our problem was not the kids. Our problem was the DAD. He yelled at those poor kids from sun up till bed time. My son was so upset he begged me to go talk to him. I almost did but then thought twice. I called security on the 2nd day. They were wonderful. Came up immediately, took the dad out in the hall for a chat. From that point on no problem. Hopefully the kids had a more memorable stay. I mean, they were just being kids!

Ok, just to speak up as one of the noisy neighbors this time around.
We had an overtired, fighting sleep, scared of the new sleeping arrangements two year old this trip and she was having a hard time going to sleep one evening. She was in process of having a total meltdown one evening at 10 pm and we were trying our best to quiet her when our neighbors in the non connecting room decided to bang on the walls with what I can only assume was shoes as loud as possible. This terrified my daughter and she thought someone was trying to break into the room and she screamed even louder. So, my input is try calling the room and asking nicely if it is possible to be quieter or having the front desk to call. My daughter even after coming home is constantly worried that someone is coming to get her at night now. I almost called next door myself to tell these people how rude this was. I feel like if you are staying poolside at the ASMo, then you should EXPECT it to be loud until at least midnight, since the pool is open until then. We heard small kids out at the pool until well after 11pm every evening.

When we vacationed here we took what extra precautions we could. I always requested a top floor corner room on the backside. More often than not I at least came near my requets, if not fully granted.
Being on the backside seems to be a big help.
The only noises I can say that were memorable was on our first stay at CSR. Luckily I did not request backside. I paid for waterview.
We were in Casitas 4. Even on our side we kept hearing this loud roaring noise during the night. It was not bothersome. Just enough to make us curious.
DH investigated.
We were near where the laundry trucks (semis) were loaded up at night and the laundry hauled away.
I always said thank goodness we were not on the backside of that building!

The other time was at ASMu, the Rock Inn building in January.
Yep -- the cheerleaders.
And actually Disney did a great job at housing them primarily together in Jazz.
We were on the backside, but near the elevator. The only time it was ridiculous was when the cheerleaders were leaving in the wee hours of the morning.
Between the busses housed back there, and running for hours, the higher than usual parking lot noice, and then cheering cheerleaders... it was bad.
Luckily it all stopped once the busses pulled out early morning -- probably around 4:00 a.m.
I was surprised Disney did not have security or someone there to at least try to quiet the cheerleaders.
We were restless anyway -- me due to the start of a Disney trip and DH because he had to rise early to run in a marathon. It did not bother us terribly. But I kept thinking others would call and someone would come to quiet the cheerleaders down. Next time I would call.

Anyone bothered by noise at night -- I suggest packing ear plugs. That's the best bet! :)

Good input from luvitmoreachtime. Yelling back or pounding noise is not going to help much calming a cranky kid, I would not think.

But for those wanting to stay poolside at a value, I wanted to chime in.
On another ASMu stay we paid for preferred. I requested the backside, but got main poolside. :earseek:
I thioght :crazy2: and expected to hear noises and yelling at all hours of the night.
We did not ask to switch because we were immediately surprised.
Late afternoon check in -- the pool music is blaring and guests are in the pool.
We close the door. Complete quiet. They did a great job of blocking out the pool noises from coming into the room.
Although I cannot say the same for between the rooms. I was glad it was just a long weekend trip and not a full week. We were on the second floor and got a lot of foot traffic going by. And it was noiser at night being nearer the front of the resort. That was just more crowded weekend anyway -- Columbus Day weekend.

I just didn't want anyone to panic if they were staying in a pool view room at a value and think they would hear a lot of pool noise. Once that door was shut, we did not hear pool noise. Only the noise from those staying near or walking by in the cooridor.

As a frequent All star resort stayer, I have learned to ask a few questions when I check in.

1. Are there any competitions going on right now and where are there rooms?

2. Make sure they dont put you next to the laundry area. This is usually on the backside of the cafe. They tend to have the laundry trucks backin in and out all night long. And they all have that reverse BEEP BEEP BEEP

3. Keep in mind that they pressure wash the pool areas every morning usually starting around 7 am.

Disney if very accomidating. They have moved us when we got stuck right in the middle of THE CHEERLEADERS. They warned us about it at check in, and said if we had any problems to let them know and they would move us right away.

I dont think it does anygood for you to speak to them. Call front desk and have them do it.

Doug

The only problems we 've had with noisy neighbors was for our 10 yr. wedding anniversary at the GF. Really noisy kids next door with a yelling dad. We immediately went to the front dest and politely requested to be moved. We were upgraded to one of the nicest rooms I've ever had at WD. It was a lagoon view with a dormer balcony. Lucked out on that one.

One thing we now travel with is a small fan. I know that sounds silly, but we turn the fan on high speed when we go to bed and that tunes out just about all of the noise. Even if it means taking a larger suitcase to fit the fan in, nothing beats a good night's rest.

I know this isn't a noise issue but one thing that really bothers me is when I have a non-smoking room and the person next door smokes. The smoke seeps in thru the vents and adjoining doors. This happened to us at the WL. I stuffed towels under the doors and it helped but you could still smell it.

We have stayed at POR a number of times and have not had any inside noisy neighbor problems. I say inside because our problem is the people who walk around outside of the rooms at all hours of the night. If you need to smoke, get ice, or whatever, please remember to keep it down! Also one time at CS when it ws just me and my sister, whoever was in the adjoining room decided to beat on it at about 2a.m. Scarred the tar out of both of us!:scared1: After the 2nd time, I yelled something back. It wasn't very nice.:earseek:

I had the misfortune to go to WDW -- POR -- once when the cheerleading competition was taking place. They were basically good kids, but they practiced their cheers at 8:30 a.m. right outside the rooms! The whole resort was in an uproar. Before I even had a chance (& I'm infamous for my lack of patience when it comes to noise), someone complained & the kids were moved to some less accessible little bit of on-the-firm-side-swampland. That didn't affect their nosie level on the buses, but that's another thread....

OK........I am ashamed to admit to this but I will since it was funny at the time! We were staying at the Old Faithful Lodge at Yellowstone, and if you stay in the original building you do not have AC, phone or even a bathroom, just a sink and bed. Being from FL we were always up early since we never did get on MTN. time.......Had gone to bed about 9pm and the neighbors were extremely loud and ubnoxious, I said something about making sure to wake them up at 5am.............well my partner at the time had already thought of that! He had actually gone to the desk and requested a wake up call for them for 430 am, now since there was no phones someone actually had to come to their door and knock! We heard the whole thing, but of course we were up anyways! They were very pissed but we had a great laugh about it..........I guess we were naughty and young but it was funny then!

We bring a sound soother machine along. We both like the thunderstorm. This will drown out most noises, but if it doesn't I would call the front desk.

Years ago, we had a party going on next to us one night at a hotel in Michigan, we were there for one night only. We called the front desk and they sent someone up, they quieted down for 20 minutes then started up again, it was 1 a.m. I called again and told them what was going on and said that we were ready to check out and not going to pay because of this. They apologized, they sent security, they showed up and left. It was still loud. A few minutes later, security was back, along with the police. Everyone in that wing was looking out their doors to see what was going on. After the excitement. It was quiet as a mouse. No more problems. A few of the people were taken away by the police.

The next morning, we went down to the desk, they apologized. Our charge for the room was reduced to $20 and they gave us free certificates for the breakfast buffet they had. Not continental but full blown with waffles, pancakes, omelettes, etc. We talked to a few of the people who were in the same wing as us and found out they did this for everyone.

In this day and age, I would highly recommend not to confront the noisy folks, but call the front desk and let them handle it. You never know how the noisemakers will react to your comments. They might key your car if they saw you arriving in it, or worse could make the confrontation physical. Not what I would want to happen on a vacation.
