Is there anything I can do with these points at all?

They were banked from last year. I used what I could and we just did a 3 night stay at HHI in a studio (great trip!). I had a waitlist for one extra night to try and use them up, but it never came through.

Never been in this situation before.

thanks for any advice.

There is not much you can do with 8 banked points that expire on 8/31/2012.

Your only option is to make a reservation with the points. You could use the reservation yourself or try to rent it to someone else. You may have to add points (borrow) to be able to make the reservation, and you may even have trouble finding availability since the points expire in less than 2 months.

I know it's hard, but the best choice may be to just let them go. Sorry.

Give them away?
Even that would be hard to do.

Since the points are banked, they cannot be transferred. She would still have to make a reservation to use the points.

Of course, she could give the reservation away if she could find someone who would use it.

I have a similar situation but it is just 1 borrowed point. It is just 1 point, but I still hate to loose it. But there is nothing I can do.

Frustrating, isn't it? Eight or nine months ago, I changed several reservations for the trip we just finished just to avoid having 6 points left over that we wouldn't be able to use. I was happy with the reservations we had, but just couldn't let those 6 points go. :rotfl:

Since you're not able to do that at this point, I'd say just let them expire. For the approximate $96 in value (based on rental prices), it's not the hassle to try to do anything with them at the last minute.

Just let them slip away quietly. Shhhh. Shhhh. Shhhh. There there. It's okay. It's okay. They're going to a better place.

A few years ago, I had 10 banked points that were nearing expiration (< 2 months) and was able to rent them out to a fellow member on short notice for one additional night reservation to add to there vacation. I let them go for $8, since I would have got nothing if the points expired.

I say all that to just say, its possible to find a renter even on short notice. Try it, you don't have anything else to lose, other than your time and a little effort. There's always someone looking for a bargain.

Good luck.

It would be nice if it were possible to donate them to a non-profit like you can with airline miles. Make-a-wish, etc.

Would the reservation have to fall within the expiration time period,,in other words would the reservation have to occur before the end of Aug?

Does DVC have an option to donate them to charity?

I do this with frequent flyer miles that are going to expire.

One other option would be an impassioned plea to MS, "oh my goodness, I just realized that I've left points unbanked. Is there anything you can do to help me?"

There's no guarantee. And if they were to make an exception and bank them for you, it would never happen again. You need to decide if 8 points is worth using your one and only potential MS silver bullet.

OP I was coming her to ask to same questio....I have 7 points that expire on 10/31 and since it's not enough for even one room night...I was hoping there was some type of donation pool...but since it doesnt look that way im just going to have to let them slip away....

No, any sort of donation pool would cost DVCers money to manage. Remember that even if they allowed a charity to receive numerous transfers of points, even holding points, those point would still have to retain any encumbrance to their usage, like holding status, reservation point status, and so on. There would still be many points that could not be used. It would also the creation of a false DVC account/membership in the computer system and the designated charity would need to have someone on staff to work with Member Services for reservations etc. And would you want a charity, if they receive large enough donation of points, to compete with owners for a reservation?

What an individual member could do, if they have enough points for one night, would be contact a charity directly and set up a reservation for the charity's client, if needed.

I believe that the points are banked points so this option wouldn't work.

At this point, they could be combined with the one time use points that you can buy from MS (if OP hasn't used any this UY) for a one nights stay--might be someone interested in adding to a current stay, etc.
