What to do when you have too many pins to fit on a lanyard?

Our kids(DS9 & DD12) really enjoy pin trading when we go to Disney once a year, however we are not "collectors" or big time pin traders, it's just a fun thing to do while enjoying Disney World. So, over the last couple of years, of course we've bought them more pins and they now have more than will fit on a lanyard comfortably. Last year, I had them leave home the ones they knew for sure they wouldn't trade and only bring traders. I suggested this again this year and DD said "what's the point of having them if you don't wear them?" so now I don't know what to do. Their pins won't fit on the lanyard and we're not going to have them wear 2 lanyards or vests or anything. This is just a small fun thing they do, not the focus of our trip.

So, what have you done when your kids had full lanyards?

Thanks!

We're also looking forward to initiating DD's friend into the pin trading fun this trip! But her lanyard won't be too full!

We're not pin traders but we have noticed some people wear vests with pins.

You can always start a new lanyard and they can wear them alternately!!
They can then hang in there rooms and be a special memory of WDW!! Mine hangs off a mirror and I love looking at those pins!! :wizard:

We saw a cute pin book while we were there that I wish I would have bought for DS - HE has 2 lanyards and he wears his traders on one in the park and leaves the other in the room with his special pins that he doesn't want to trade but the book is a cute idea also we saw a pin trader fanny pack to put pins in.

I have more pins than lanyard space so one trip, I got a bucket hat and just put my pins on there. This trip, I'm just packing the traders in my fanny pack because I can't stand the way the lanyard rubs on my neck.

my sister had a lanyerd but it was to full, we thought she had alot and put it in one oof those disney pin books, she uses that alot to put her pins in.

I have two lanyards.

you can wear both at the same time or leave one in the hotel room and alternate between the two lanyards.

The books are cute, but they're mainly for collectors and not traders. The tip about leaving at home the ones you don't want to trade - I do this too. All my surprise pins, limited editions, and other ones that have been discontinued but I really like I leave at home. A general rule for me is only trade ones that you could go to the pin store and pick right back up if you were dissatisfied with a trade.

The lanyards itch my neck too! I might come up with a new way of displaying them. I"ve seen blazers, leather jackets, bucket hats, vests, ties (!), everything.

Having done pin trading for a long time, I suggest they stay at home. Unless you use the locking pin backs, there's the chance you could lose one of your "keepers."

I gave up wearing a lanyard a couple of years ago (too heavy around the neck). Instead I carry some traders in my pocket and put my keepers in a zip lock bag.

Thanks for the input!

We leave on Sunday so we have a week to decide how to handle this. I think I'm just going to insist they leave home the keepers and only take the traders.

DH has his keepers on a hat but has now put his traders on a lanyard. He'd like a new hat but has a very large head and we can't find any bucket hats that fit right so he's had to make due with the safari type hat he bought at AK. The problem is it has sweat stains on it and you can't wash it. Any recommendations for somewhere to buy a large bucket hat at Disney?

Keep those ideas coming!

I'm a collector and do not trade, so I don't wear a lanyard at all. I have a case, the book-style one with the zipper that goes all the way around and a small handle and shoulder strap. I keep them all in the case and take out the ones I want to wear the next day and attach them to my hat and camera bag strap while we're hanging out in the room. I change them by park or by activity and there are some standards I wear all the time.

It's getting hard to carry that big case all the time and it's filling up, so for the next trip I'm going to pick up a smaller case, like the small backpack or one of the "kids" collector boxes. Before I leave home, I'll take the pins I want to travel with and put them into the smaller case, then choose from those what to wear on my hat and my camera strap. I use locking backs on all the pins I wear in the parks, just in case.

I have a combination of traders and collector pins. The ones that I don't want to trade, I plan to leave at home. I will fill my lanyard up with the ones I want to trade the most. Then I plan to put the others that I want to trade in the fannypack that I purchased off of EBAY from a couple who made them up to sell at DL. It is a large fannypack with a pocket in the front that has pages to put pins on. I think it will probably hold about 20-30 average size pins. I also have a very small pin bag which holds about 15 - 20 pins that I will use to put my special LE traders in. As the trip goes on, I can move the pins I traded for and want to save from my lanyard to my fannypack and the pins I want to trade, from my fannypack onto my lanyard. The fannypack is large enough to hold most everything I need and even has a water bottle holder and cell phone holder on the outside. I carry it over my shoulder so as not to embarress my family with my large fannypack. But, it is a great way to carry everything I need and some of what they need without the heaviness of a backpack. I'll be honest. I have several pins but I have no intention of trading them. I bought them with the intent to keep for myself. But I do have 2 lanyards right now but I usually just put a couple of them on the ball cap that I wear to the park that day. So I keep changing them up that way.

I have the big disney pin trading bag that has pages that I keep all my pins in at home and then I have the pin trading fanny pack that has a few pages in the front to take pins to WDW in.

Here's some on ebay, thats where I got mine (these aren't my auctions or anything, just examples of whats out there):

I just take certain ones to WDW- some to wear and some to trade.

Hi, my 6 year old grandson (DGS) caught the pin bug last year when we were given two freebie pins/lanyards as part of a vacation package. Here is my concern... I am new to all this pin business, so bear with me. DGS now has about 7 pins. So far, he is interested in collecting pins, not trading them. He hand picked most of his pins and is very excited about owning every single one of them. He loves to wear the lanyard to the parks, sort of as a way to show them off since he is so proud of his newfound treasures. Does pin trading ettiquette dictate that if you are wearing a lanyard, then you are willing to trade your pins? Can't you just wear your pins like jewelry, where you want to be seen with those cool pins around your neck but have no intention of trading them? Thanks for any help! Tink :flower:

I'm debating the same thing for next summer's trip(I nabbed a Tron pin in a trade)

I keep mine on display on a corkboard on my mantle. They're a nice reminder of our trip last year. On our next trip, I'll take a few with me, but I'll probably just have that space to add more.

This is a little off topic, but can anyone tell me where I can find the locking type pinbacks?

I just started a pin collection. I've been keeping my pins on my nylon Disney tote bag that I take out with me sometimes. I've already lost one pin and almost lost another one...the Mickey head pin backs don't seem to hold the pins on as well as the locking ones probably do, so I'd like to switch to those, but don't know where to find them?
