Hello all.

DH and I are heading back to Arizona this Sept/Oct and are considering heading to Tucson this time. Any suggestions about what to do/see in the area? We're staying a week and are not committed to staying in one place.

Thanks! :teeth:

I grew up in Tucson and my family still lives there so we visit a lot. It is great place to live and visit! Great places to visit are the Desert Museum, Saguaro National Monument, and Sabino Canyon. If you feel like going to Mexico, you could drive to Nogales which is just one hour away. Park in Nogales, AZ and walk over the border.

The fall is a great time to visit Arizona.

If you are at all interested in astronomy, Kitt Peak is a wonderful place to visit. You can take a self tour or go with a guide and see some amazing telescopes (these things are huge!) and see scientists working on different projects.

My DH is an astronomy nut but I admit I find the universe to be an amazing thing as well so I always have a good time when we travel to observatories.

Have a great trip!

ColoradoBuffaloMom, thanks! I was eyeballing the first two things you mentioned, but I'll check out everything else too.

Jcricket Fan, not a huge astronomy fan, but it does sound interesting.

Thanks guys!

Anyone else? :bitelip:

One of our best vacations ever was to the Tanque Verde Guest Rance in Tucson! www.tvgr.com

I think that they offer day packages, if you're not interested in staying. I know that you can join them for Sunday brunch, even if you're not staying there. The food is AMAZING.

I was in Tucson last month for business and I checked out the Desert Museum. It's really well done. The Birds of Prey show out over the open desert was absolutely beautiful. Just the drive out to the museum, through the desert and cacti, was incredible for an East Coast desert rookie like me.

Dodie and Laugh O. Grams, thanks! Never considered doing a ranch, but I'll look into it now. And the birds of prey thing sounds right up my alley!

Anyone else?? :teeth:

Our first trip to Arizona was last October and we spent most of it in Tucson. The University of Arizona is a pretty place to stroll around, and there is a section with a lot of eating places and shops that we enjoyed checking out. There are also museums on campus, (Arizona State Museum, Arizona Historical Society, Center for Creative Photography, and others), that might interest you.

Like other posters have mentioned, the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum is a great place to spend some time. I'm not sure why it's called a museum because most of the animals, (we had never seen javalinas before!), and sites are outside. Be prepared to walk a lot! Wear comfortable shoes and don't forget the sunscreen. We were there the end of October and I couldn't believe the intensity of the sun- wow! My husband reminded me that yes, it's hot, it's the desert! :rotfl2: Also, be sure not to feed the wild coyotes! We got a kick out of the signs near the parking lot. :rotfl2:

The drive to and from the Sonora Desert was amazingly beautiful. The road wound up into the mountains and there were scenic sites to stop at where picture taking was awesome. Lots of cacti, which we really couldn't take our eyes off. Coming from New England, it all looked very strange! It was also fun spotting the very expensive houses that dotted the landscape and seemed to be built on the edges of cliffs.

If you like to gamble, there are a couple of casinos in the area. We spent some time at one that wasn't too far from the Tucson airport. The casinos aren't huge, but fun if you like that sort of thing. While my husband won on Black Jack, I lost on the slots. Easy come, easy go!

We also spent some time in the Phoenix/Mesa area, which is about a two hour drive from Tucson.
