What to do about a request

First let me start by saying I totally understand that a request is never guaranteed. That being said my request is more of a need at this point. I am staying at OKW next week, I broke my foot this past tuesday and am on crutches and since the buildings at OKW don't have elevators I have to have a first floor room otherwise I won't be able to get to my room. I already called MS to put is on my reservation but I was told it can't be guaranteed. Any suggestions.

I've only stayed at OKW twice, and it's hard for me to climb steps. Both times I had the request "First floor or Elevator Building" and I got what I needed both times. I wish the same for you. Check in early if you can and I think you'll be accomodated.

PS. Do you want to try your "luck" getting another resort at this point?

Make sure that "ground floor or elevator building" is noted as a medical necessity, not merely as a preference.

My understanding is that medical necessities are handled before mere preferences.

Will you use a car or Disney transportation? If you'll have a car, it would be good to be in a building with plenty of parking. If you'll use Disney transportation, you might want to request a room near a bus stop.

Crutches are fine for short distances, but you'll probably want to use a wheelchair around OKW and at the parks. Disney resorts are supposed to be able to supply a courtesy wheelchair for the length of your stay (based on availability). Not all cast members have the same understanding, so if someone claims they can't help you, ask for a manager. If no wheelchair is available, ask them to borrow one from another resort.

If you rent a wheelchair at a park, you can save some money by paying for several days at the once. However, with the courtesy wheelchair from your resort, you should not have to rent a wheelchair at the park at all.

Sorry to hear about your foot. Have fun anyway.

Request first floor or building with elevator "due to medical need". Then confirm at check in that they have you in one. DH had just had knee surgery before our stay at OKW last year and this was our exact request. We were put in a first floor room in a building with an elevator. lol

I second getting something for going around the parks. If you're planning on the parks it's just too much for crutches. My DH is extremely stubborn and was going to give it a try or else not got at all. I just went ahead and booked a scooter for him. He quickly decided that was the best thing that possibly could have been done or he would have spent next to no time in the parks.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I did add first floor for medical reasons but I will call back and add or elevator. I am only going for 3 days to see my sister for Christmas and may not do the parks at all and if we do it will only be one so I will rent either a ECV or Wheel chair at the park.

I will be checking in early as my flight lands at 10 am and I will be on crutches so if I am not assigned a first floor room hopefully they will be able to switch it.

Bobbi, I did call and try to switch to SSR but they didn't have any availability so that isn't an option.

I thought the courtesy wheelchair at the resort was for using at the resort only, not for taking on the bus with you to use at he parks. yo will still need to rent one at the parks for yur days. If it wasn't that way, then everyone would use the "courtesy wheelchair" from their resort instead of paying for one.

Ask about a handicapped room. They have wider doors and rails in the bathroom. I am assuming they are on the ground level.

The resorts will allow you to use the chair for your whole stay and to take it where ever you wish. The problem is that you don't know what kind of shape the chair will be in - or if one will even be available so while it's good in a pinch it's not great to count upon it if you really need one.

I learned very quickly by my first trip to the world that requests seem to never be looked at ahead of time. Now, that I know this I wait to see where they put me when I check in. If I don't like it, I will ask if there are any rooms available in a better spot, and they have always been able to find a room available where I would have requested. We always check in early afternoon, so that does make a difference I am sure. You shouldn't have a problem since you will be there early too!!! Have fun on your trip!!!
