I'm planning a solo trip for late 2013/early 2014 and I'd really love a new camera. Right now I have a Nikon Coolpix s3000 and while it's not the worst, it's certainly is not the best! Since I'm going solo I thought I might splurge a little on a new camera because I'll be on my own time and I can take all the photos I want!  I don't have a brand preference, just a nice dslr but not too expensive and maybe not too big. Suggestions?!

Take a look at one of the mirrorless options if size is a concern. They take DSLR quality photos but come in a smaller package. Olympus and Panasonic have quite a few lenses available for the micro 4/3 system, Sony has the Nex, and now Canon, Nikon, and Pentax have mirrorless options.

I switched from my Olympus DSLR first to the E-PL2 and now I have the E-M5 and haven't regretted the move.
