What to buy at Wegman's

Just bought barley malt syrup there last week for bagels, only place around me that I can find it.

Wegmans is the only place I buy pork chops and steak - family packs. They are individually packed/sealed so I just cut apart the pieces and stick them in the freezer. Thaw them for 30 minutes in cold water and throw them on the grill...they are moist with great flavor. Don't buy chicken because the pieces in the family pack are sized so funny - there will be a few small breasts and several HUGE ones, portion size of those drives me crazy.

Also frozen fish - grouper, mahi, tuna, swordfish, etc. A pack typically has 2 individually wrapped pieces, packages prices from $9.99 to $15.99 depending on the fish. That's 1/2 to 1/3 the price of their fresh fish which is WAY high (but great quality, I just can't pay that much). Got a family pack of frozen mahi that was great, very firm when thawed.

Use their olive and canola oil for day to day cooking. Flour and stuff like that is good. A friend swears by their spaghetti sauce and frozen pizza. For some reason, their cream always has very short expiration times very strange.....
Thanks for the recommendations and nice to hear from another bagel maker!

I went to the new store last night at 9 pm because I couldn't stay away. I also wasn't going to deal with the madness during the day. It certainly lives up to the hype. I found their produce to be excellent. I got the family size of seedless cucumbers, Roma tomatoes, and avocados. I get my meat from Zaycon, and their prices/quality can't be beat. I checked out the meat section though, and it looked great. I like how it's vacuumed sealed for the freezer. I'm most excited about their ready to cook meals. There are a lot of time on the weekend we are out and about leaving no time for me to prep and cook dinner. Wegman's give us a good option to run in and buy a meal that can be cooked in a little amount of time. Bonus that they include nutrition info on the packaging.

The generic stuff is priced well. I tried their fire roasted chipotle salsa as soon as I got home (even though I had no chips - it's going in taco stuffed peppers later this week). It was amazing. I usually buy a name brand salsa which is $5 a jar for a smaller. The Wegman's version was only $3 - Win!

We shop the Fredericksburg store weekly. One big thing we have found is their family pack of store brand applesauce pouches - way cheaper than anywhere else. Same with waffles, fish sticks, yogurt and Greek yogurt. Their store brand paper products (tissues, toilet paper, etc) and batteries are a good deal too. And chicken - a coworker has me purchase chicken for her periodically. And we get takeout pizza periodically too.

When I visited my friend in VA last year, she's outside of DC, we went there to get the prepared food for dinner. Easy way for the 3 of us to all get what we wanted. The meatball sub I had was really good. I was impressed at their store though I didn't look around much. It just made me miss the grocery stores we had in NC more. We are seriously lacking grocery stores in the Seattle area. They all either merge, close or merge and then close. I also think our Fred Meyer chain, which I do like and is decent, is similar to Meijer and owned by Kroger now, is the reason we don't have Super Target here. There might be 1 Super Walmart but I'm not positive.

The prepared food was what impressed me as well the one time I've been to Wegman's. I liked that everyone could get exactly what they wanted.

Our store has been open for several years and just over the last 6 months or so the prepared food selection has increased significantly. Also the amount of grab and go cut up fruit and vegetables is up as well.

Here's my random list:

Wegman's has the world's biggest box of Grape Nuts that has ever existed. It is an incredible deal.

Their generic version of Life Cereal is the only kind I can find anywhere without food dye (why a light brown cereal would need food dye is beyond me!) My son loves it.

Their genetic gluten free waffles (we actually get them because they are egg free) are fabulous and well priced.

I LOVE Wegman's! I really like their riced cauliflower (in the fresh produce section) and the pre-cut stir-fry veggies. We also like their store-brand potato and corn chips. My kids prefer their tortilla chips to name-brand. I also agree with others on the family packs.

The basting oil is really good--if you sign up for a loyalty card you will get coupons for free products and I believe a bottle of the basting oil is one of them.

I am still discovering new things. Their offerings change frequently. I also like that they source produce locally and they will display the name of the farm on the signs. They also bag groceries well. Highly recommend the store.

This thread is so exciting! I cannot believe that so many of us live in the same area. I mainly shop Costco, Aldi, and Kroger, but it looks like I might have to give Wegmans a try once the traffic dies down. I am going to update my price book in the next few weeks, and then I will compare. I had heard Wegman's was expensive, so I wasn't excited about it, but now I am!

I live in upstate NY and did not understand the Wegmans obsession until I moved up here! Now I love it! Always get chicken breasts and produce from Wegmans. A lot of their store brand is a good value, too. They have some great premade dinner options. Also, they have an extensive "health food" section. I buy my Quest bars there!

And I love their Helping Hands program and that they really encourage you to use reusable shopping bags.

I live in the city where Wegmans was born. And I usually shop at the smallest location they have, but it's two miles from me.

When doing a big shop, I make two stops. The first at a "value" store like Aldi or Price Rite for basics and then to Wegmans for the specialty items. I make a lot of food with "international" flavors and can almost always find what I want at the little Wegmans. I'll go to the suburbs if I want an even better selection.

Don't know how the prepared foods sections are out of state, but I love the sub shop, especially now that you can get soup as a side in a combo. The $6 meals are now $7/8/10 and have gone more towards prepackaged side selections, so I rarely get those anymore. Their pre made Brussels sprouts are divine and I've been able to recreate them with their basting oil.

They offer so many ready to cook or pre cooked options for busy folks that may cost a bit more than doing it yourself, but are cheaper and healthier than regular take out or a restaurant meal. Heck, sometimes I'll just grab A chicken finger for a protein boost when I need a little something.

When I go I usually pick up their KCups in decaf, the big pack. They also have a blueberry salad dressing I like. Last time there I bought a package of 10 boxes of Kleenex tissues which was great, they weren't falling all over the place. They had bottles of orange sangria near the check out for $4 and that was pretty good. Their candy section is interesting but the two things I sometimes buy - root beer barrels and sugar free candy for my mother - were empty. I like how they have all kinds of fruits and veggies cut up to help make quick meals. They come at a price, but healthy meals aren't always cheap, especially for those short on time.

I don't do my weekly shopping there but if I'm nearby (we have two in the Boston area) I'll run in. DD likes to sit and eat there. It is a beautiful shopping experience with the decor of the store and the smells and colors of the foods, etc. When I first visited Wegmans several years back in Buffalo, NY, I think I spent an hour in the home goods aisle, picking up several unique things for my home. Neither of our stores here have that type of thing. Chestnut Hill has just a very small home goods aisle with mostly plasticware, and Westwood has a larger aisle, but not as may unique products as they had in NY. Not sure if it's just us or if all their stores cut back.

This thread should have probably been title "What NOT to buy at Wegman's". It's the best. The one near us opened around 7 or 8 years ago and we've never looked back. Their brand name items are fantastic. There's a few I'm not the biggest fan of (i.e. pasta sauce, but I like making from scratch anyway) and some of the bar items (salad bar, asian bar, olive bar, etc.) can get a bit pricey, but overall prices are fantastic. As most said already, the family packs are really great. Try the pork tenderloin family pack. We can get 3 meals out of that easily.

I'm scared I'm going to end up with a bunch of new must-haves. I really need to stay away from the bakery! Plus my ds already gives me a hard time when I run errands about how many places I go. Now I'm just adding another. But I'm really excited.

Grew up with Wegmans and now live in another part of country. When I go home I stock up on peanut donuts and sponge candy!!!!!!!!! Gosh I miss it!
