What to bring for engagement party gift

A mutual friend of DH and I just got engaged a few weeks ago. DH is going to be best man at the wedding. They told us last night that they are having an engagement party in a few weeks. I have never been to an engagement party before but I am assuming that you bring a gift. But what do you bring??? The wedding isn’t until next October so they aren’t registered anywhere yet. I have made really nice gift baskets for other events in the past, would that be appropriate for an engagement party? Maybe with some engraved wine glasses, bottle of wine, etc.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

I have never given a gift for the 'engagement', just a card. They are already getting a shower gift and a wedding gift from me. That's enough!

Brookstone has an awesome Wine Conisour Kit. It includes a great wine bottle opener, some cork screws, etc. It was about $50.00. The couple we gave it to loved it!

A gift they could use before the wedding would be nice. Maybe a wedding planner or a gift card to shop that specializes in wedding stuff. Or even a gift card to their favorite resturant.

gifts are generally not expected at an engagement party. we did get some cards & a couple of bottles of wine from ours this june though. i think either of those (a card or wine) is fine if you want to give something.

Gifts are not usually given at engagement parties, but when some very good friends of ours got married, we gave them a wedding planner that they could use. I say if you really want to give something, I would do something along those lines.

I agree...gifts usually aren't expected at engagement parties.

However, as a joke a few years ago we gave my brother and future SIL a gift basket with a marguarita mix and some barware. In the card we wrote, "To be used ONLY in the case of an emergency (wedding planning qualifies).

Good luck...let us know what other people do after the party so I can steal their ideas!
