What to avoid at Aldi?

LOL, given my experiences with Aldi's, I'd say: the food.

Ain't that the truth.
My beef with Aldi isn't really with quality, it's price. They are too inconsistent with pricing, and store brands at Kroger/Meijer are very comparable with Aldi.

As for things I absolutely will not buy at Aldi:
Baked items-fresh bread/buns should not last a month.
Meats-too many preservatives and too expensive anyway.
Bagged dog food-it was dog fart city around here.
Kleenex/toilet paper-sandpaper is softer.

I stop in once a month to check milk and egg prices, if those 2 items are cheap, then I will pick up a few needed items. Lately the prices on those 2 things have not been low enough to make a purchase.

I won't buy:

green olives
mayonnaise
boxed mashed potatoes
meat (I used to, but now it all looks shiny and over-preserved)
salsa

Aldis used to sell really good salsa in shorter jars, I always bought the chipotle flavor but they don't sell it anymore. The blue corn tortilla chips are really good. The condensed soups are good, I stock up on the cream of mushroom and tomato.

An Aldi's opened up last year near me and after all the hype on these boards, I couldn't wait to check it out.... I've been there TWICE since it opened a year ago and I never bought anything. I can't bring myself to go back. I know TJ's and Aldi's are supposedly owned by the same company, but I'd drive an hour to get to TJ's and stock up before I'd drive 5 min. to Aldi's to buy anything.... Granted I'm a sucker for organic foods and as few preservatives as possible (which is why I'm a Trader Joe's fan).... so I think that's why I just don't care for Aldi's. :confused3

I won't buy

bacon
breakfast sausage
dog food and treats (our dog is allergic to wheat and possibly corn)
mayo
toilet paper
paper towels
cereal
aluminum foil
yogurt

There are many items at Aldi that we do like though.

I won't buy the ice cream. One time last spring, DH had a craving for some and Aldi's had it advertised at a good price....So being the wonderful wife I am :rolleyes1 I ran over and got some.

Now, I'm not an ice cream snob at all, but the ice cream at Aldi's was just horrid.

I drove 1 1/2 hours to get to the nearest Aldi. I don't get it??? The prices didn't seem all that great to me. I went expecting to come back with a car load but ended up only getting paper plates, clorox wipes, and a loaf of bread. The plates and wipes were fine but the bread was stale.

I don't care for their potato chips.. Other than that, I've had great experiences with all of my purchases there..:thumbsup2

Well, I was excited to see an Aldi opening somewhat near us. After reading this thread I don't think I'll bother.

I just went to Aldi's this afternoon. I don't get everything at Aldi's but the price is right for alot of things! Lots of varying opinions here - only you can decide if this store is worth your time.

We used to by the brownie mix all the time. it was great.

Then they changed the packaging and made them and they had a terrible after taste. Terribly disappointing!

OMG they were horrible! Tasted like gasoline or something.

I'm buying 90% of my groceries there and did a 6 mos. comparison and am saving $80 a month.

They just opened here. So far, I love it. Now our stores are brand new but the produce quality has been really good. I liked the prices on snacky foods - crackers, little debbie like items, peanuts, etc. Everything has been tasty so far. I don't care for the Cheezits but DH loved them. We also really like their ice cream sundae cones and I think they are a steal.

I won't buy meat there - I like having a butcher shop attached to the meat section.
