What time to leave VGC for SNA?

We are flying out of SNA on Monday the 25th. Our flight is around 9 am. How long before our flight should we be leaving for SNA? We have a rental car, and need to return that at the airport also.

We are not going directly to DL from the airport, so I will have no idea how far the airport is from DL.

It will be about 30 minutes of driving. A little traffic but mostly carpool lanes to help you. The airport is small so getting to the rentals should be easy.

I've driven from the DL area to SNA during the morning rush. Traffic on I-5 can be horrible, bumper to bumper. I think it took about an hour. I'd allow 2 1/2. I don't know if an alternate route alway from I-5 would be better, I checked mapquest, you can follow S Harbor to MacArthur but you will probably hit alot of lights.
