What time do your kids do homework?

DD13 comes home right at 4 pm, if she has anything going on that night it doesn't leave a lot of time for homework, supper and whatever the activity is, so it's better to get it done right away. She usually has a snack and tells me about her day and then jumps right into the homework.

Another reason for getting right to it is because some nights she has a ton, if she waited until after dinner she may not get it all done.

She also has a reading log, where she is supposed to read so many minutes a week. We divided the time by # of days and know she needs to read for 40 minutes each night. She has found the best way to do that each day is to read right at bedtime, she gets ready for bed an hour before bedtime and then reads in her room until it's time for lights out.

Our school does not have school on Fridays so we have longer days. Most kids are there at 7:30am and dont leave till 4:15 and if you are in sports you dont leave until 6:15.
School board will hear alot from us of there is to much homework overload. At the beginning of the year they all sign contracts about keeping up grades and such even teaches sign saying they will not overload homework.

Im sorry i vented. Just didnt know where else to go.:confused3

No school on Fridays, I have NEVER heard of this-a four day school week? What is the rationale behind that? It seems like a very long school day for the kids!

I usually have dinner because don't get home from school until 5 or so and then I do my homework.

allison443- We are a very small school. more and more smaller schools around here are either going to 4 day week or ar looking into it.

The rearoning behind it is kids are always leaving for some thing or other like dr. appts or thier games. School board looked at having 4-day weeks so that there would not be as many abbsents. It also cuts on costs to run the school.

On game days we can travel any where fron 30min to 2hrs away. Well if Mom and Dad go, along with grandparents. Parents have to take out younger siblings because there would be no one there to get them. Also when the teams the coaches are teachers and you take cheerleaders and sponsors leave there is only 1 or 2 kids left in class. All subs are parents too. We are a A1 school. There are only around 100 kids enrolled from k-12th. So on game days our town is empty.

Yes it is a longer day. But homework is not bad its just from the one teacher. DD12 starts weightlifting tomorrow that is at 7am. Good thing we live 2blocks from school.

All most all the parents like the 4-day week. The knd. class adjusts well to. They do a 3-day week full days. For the first 2-weeks they go haf a day just to get used to it.

Once and awhile we do go on Fridays as a make up snow day. They really drag on Fridays, They are used to sleeping in on Fridays.

My kids (7th and 9th grade) vary their homework time around their activity schedules. Usually they do it soon after school, though, because they know they're not allowed to watch TV, play vid games, or get on the computer until it's done. If they want "down time" before homework (which DH and I heartily endorse) it's usually reading or doing something outside.

My kids do it after dinner, except on dance class days, when they have to do it as soon as they get home. My kids need some time to rest and veg after school and there is never a problem getting them to do their homework after dinner.

DD gets a snack and then does her homework. She then can play or do whatever she wants.

DS13 usually does his at school while he's waiting for the bus. Since he's the second load, he has to wait about 30 minutes.

DS8 does his after he has a snack. He comes in, unwinds for a few and then gets started. It usually takes him about 30 minutes but sometimes it's longer. If he doesn't have any homework, then he's suppose to study his spelling words for the week.

We have about an hour of decompression time when they can play, watch tv, play video games or whatever they want. They've had 7 hours of scheduled work/play, so they need some down time. They work on homework while I cook dinner. That way, I'm available if they need help. I can't imagine my guys doing their homework immediately after school. I don't think it would be their best work.

My children's school is 7:45 to 2:22. We live across the street, :) so they are home in 2 minutes flat. We sit, talk about the day, have a glass of milk, snack, etc...I then ask them for 30 min of homework time. After that, we relax, and they can do anything they want. After supper they finish their homework.

Of course during football season, this is MUCH different. My DS11 (in 4 weeks) has practice 3-4 times a week, and games on weekends. He must do all home right after school. His choice, and he does it. Our football system is great, no pressure. Coach STRICTLY says, if you can not finish your homework easily, don't come to practice. Call and let us know WHY, just don't NOT show up...I think that is a great way to be..

All in all, some nights are hectic, but we get the job done, and I refuse to make my kids sit for 2 to 3 more hours after their day. This may change next year when DD goes into a different school, with a harder program...One day at a time.

They are home by 2 pm and start their homework right away. They like to get it done. My 13 yo has 2 to 3 hours of homework a night and is in the 99% so there is no struggling there. I would shudder to see if there was difficulty with school how long it would take. Then they shower and can do whatever they want until dinner/after dinner. If it's nice out, they don't shower right away, they go out and play, then come in shower, have dinner, etc. They are more relaxed this way and it works for us.

DS11 gets home at 5pm, DD14 gets home closer to 5:30.

They play/relax until dinner...usually about 6pm.

Homework is then done immediately after dinner.

My dd9 is in 3rd grade and we do homework right after school. I pick her up at 3:00 and then we go to dd5's preschool and get her at 3:30. We usually have about 15 min to wait in the car and in most cases homework is finished before we even get home.

In my experience, homework takes twice as long if I don't catch her while she is still in the "working" mode. We have had some really overdramatic whining and complaining when we put it off till later in the night. I know that I enjoy what I do much more if I don't have something hanging over my head that I know I need to do later.

When we get it out of the way first thing, we can all enjoy the rest of the night better!

I was surprised today when I was at an afterschool function and they took a vote. They asked the kids what they would normally be doing RIGHT AFTER SCHOOL. They asked:
Having snack.
Playing sports.
Other classes.
Watching TV.
Playing outdoors.
Video or computer games.
Doing Homework.
MOST of the kids said they do homework RIGHT after school. What a bummer!!! I let my kids have snack and relax for about an hour or so... then, when Im cooking dinner they sit at the island so I can help if need be. Isnt "right after school" when they need a little fuel and rest? For those of you who do have them do the homework right after school, what is the reasoning? Are they still mentally focused or something? Or, is it a matter of disipline, getting it done and staying on a schedule? Just curious...
:teacher:

This is how we do it as well.

WOW! That's a lot of work!!!
Why so much??

8th grader, honors classes...that's just how much work they get. Some days she only has 90 minutes or so, and on Fridays I don't make her do ANY of her weekend homework, so she has that day to totally relax.

But, it's just a fact of life here, and it's only going to get worse in high school, I think.

My oldest is 13 and in 7th grade. She gets home around 3:00 M-Th and at 1:00 on Fridays. Here they only do 4 periods a day so she has math and reading homework every other day and same with english and science. She comes home on the math days and gets right to it since she struggles with it. She wants to keep it fresh in her mind from class. The rest is done when she feels like getting it done. Have no issues with her.

My other 2 boys are 6th grade and 2nd grade in Elementary. They get home at 4:00 M-Th and 2:00 on Friday. Middle ds in 6th usually doesn't have homework except to study for a test he takes on Friday. Youngest rarely has homework and if he does it's done pretty fast.

:cool1: :goodvibes

NO HOMEWORK HERE!!!!!! My kids school started last year with a "NO HOMEWORK" policy....The school average went up 35%!!!!

So they are sticking to it!!!!

My kid went from a B/C student to a Straight A!!!! And since he has all this spare time...HE READS REAL BOOKs...with chapters and NO PICs!!!!:woohoo:

I hated doing Homework when I was in School...and I STILL hate doing Homework!!!

Wow, what are the standard school hours in the US? 2.22 finish?!

When I was at school it was:

Primary: 8.45-3.30 (age 4-11) with a 20 minute break and a 40 minute lunch (so 5.5 hours of class), plus 15 minute walk to school each way so we left at 8.20-8.30 most days and got home at about 3.45-4pm most days.

Secondary: 8.20-3.50 (age 11-18) with 15 minute break and 25 minute lunch (so 7 hours of class) plus 30 minute walk to and from school so I left at 7.50 and got home at 4.20 if I didn't have band or anything after school.

That was Monday-Friday too ;)
