There's one kid in dd's class , a few weeks ago my dd asked her classmate if she would join the ski club , the classmate told her no because her parents said she had to play black people's sports.
Then yesterday all kids are talking about who they think the parents are going to vote for, and my dd said Bush. Apparently this classmate mentioned that to the mother and the mother had no better thing to say that we must be voting for Bush because we are probably white. Needless to say that my dd got upset when she told her today.
What the heck is wrong with some people? No wonder why some kids grow up the way they do.

That's really a sad story. I hate to see children being taught divisions between people when they should not exist. I'm not even sure what a 'black' sport or a 'white' sport is and I think this mother is doing her child a diservice.

That is what I think too Keli. It's sad because the kid wants to do skiing badly , but they won't let her. I don't know what black people's sports are , but I am really annoyed that everything other people do gets turned into a race issue with this woman.

There is no longer a world of black and white, and I don't feel that parents should bring their children up thinking that. Both of my parents are VERY pregidous, but I on the other hand, am not as little as they are.

Racisim comes from all sides, and it's even uglier coming from someone who should know exactly how hateful and divisive it is.

Sadly, it doesn't surprise me one bit.

We went to a wedding last month, where the groom's parents didn't attend. This couple had dated for 7 years before getting married, and his parents didn't want the groom marrying the bride because she is Catholic and of Cuban decent.  We knew that they were having issues with his parents over this, but I figured that once the wedding came around, so would his parents. Unfortunately, that didn't happen. :( :(

I find this hard to believe after reading your post on the Hillary 2008 thread.

I agree. I used to work with a Hispanic woman who hated white people. I mean HATED them. I had the unfortunate expereince of meeting her mother once and I saw where she probably gets it frm because her mother was just over the top racist.

I really can not understand liking or disliking someone based upon their country of origin or the color of their skin. I just can't understand it. Esp. in this day and age. :sad2:

I hope someone at the school, be it a teacher or a guidance counselor steps in and helps that girl and I do hope she someday gets to go skiing.

I like to think that I judge people as individuals ... my "liking" or "not liking" them has nothing to do with their color/ethic background/religion, etc, but more to do with their own personal behavior and attitude.

Its ironic sometimes how those who are the first to cry racism are more racist themselves.

"Racism comes from all sides, and it's even uglier coming from someone who should know exactly how hateful and divisive it is."

I do not agree with that statement at all. Those who have historically been the target/victims of racism at least have a logical explanation for being racist themselves. Now I am not saying that all those who are members of groups who have historically (and presently) been the targets of racism are racist themselves, I just can understand that better then whites being racist towards non-whites.

IMGONNABE40!:

Those who have historically been the target/victims of racism at least have a logical explanation for being racist themselves.

I debate that ipso facto statement. There is no "logical" reason to be racist, and I would expect you to back up that claim. If being racist can be "logical" for one group, it should follow that it can be "logical" for any group.

Racism is, by definition, not logical; it is founded on prejudice that all people of the same ethnicity all act in the same way in any given circumstance; the irish all drink, the Jews are all cheap, the African Americans must only play "black sports". Therefore, since they all do something hateful, it is acceptable to hate the people doing things we hate.

I would claim that people who have been victims of racism would have an explainable reason for "reverse racism", but not a logical one.

Thats really sad. Her child will miss out on so much in life because of her feelings. :(

There is nothing wrong with being proud of your heritage ( Swedes of the world unite! ;) LOL) But to believe that you have to stick to your "own sport" is very singleminded. TG my parents didnt encourage this, Id be entered in every Lutefisk eating contest around!

LOL

You say potato and I say pa-tah-to!

You don't like logical? I can live with explainable. Not quite sure what you mean by "reverse racism", however.

I can't find any logical explanation for racism. I can't understand how that woman doesn't think that her actions hurt her daughter.

"reverse racism" is a common term used by people to discuss racism against someone of the "majority", for example, afircan americans being racist about letting a child participate in "white" sports.

Maybe I am living in the Twilight Zone but can someone clue me in?

What are "white sports" and what are "black sports"?

Thanks for the clarification. I always thought racism was racism. Didn't realize it went forward and in reverse.

I am not convinced that the mom not letting the daughter participate was racist. I think that is a leap. Remember, OP was getting this info 3rd hand--a lot could have been lost in the translation. When I was younger I could not afford to participate in ski club--though my parents may have masked that as something else (too dangerous  ). I don't think that comment about supporting Bush is racist either.

Coming out of the mouth of a black women.

This child is only repeating what her mother or father has said to her or around her. The child herself may not believe this but because her parents are saying this, so she thinks it true and it's sad because she'll always think this way until she learns different. NO it is not right PERIOD whether she was white, black or indifferent. To me it's plain ignorace.

Coming from a person who has been discriminated against and have been the brunt of "black" jokes. I don't find it funny or amusing at all. Does that make me dislike white people "NO". Does that make me run back and tell my children that white people are bad "No".

Maybe the OP daughter should have taken this child to the side and educated her on the fact that just becuase we are different colors does not mean that either race should be hated because of what has happend in the past.

We teach our daughter to be friends with everyone and to see a person from the inside not what is on the outside!

What are "white sports" and what are "black sports"?

and to answer this question...There is no such thing!

Kimickey I couldn't agree with you anymore. As you said the child is only repeating what the mother says because in no way she acts towards others as she hates them or dislikes them, as a matter of fact my dd and her are good friends in school.
I teach my kids to always treat everyone the way they like to be treated.
