What the heck is a pin code I keep reading about on these boards???

Recently became a member of this GREAT site, but am curious what a pin code is. What exactly it is and WHERE you get one (for discounts, right?!).

Select people began receiving postcards in the mail from Disney. I think some were from DL, and others from WDW. On those postcards had codes, or PIN codes, individual to each recipiant. These codes gave guests the ability to reserve hotel rooms with a great discount. For example, PPH $159/night, DLH $169/night, and GCH for like $219/night.
Without that PIN code, you cannot get the discount.

It is not a code that you can just read online and use--like any other coupon code. So each code is different--and they have to match it up to your name. We got ours through an email, but other people have gotten them through the mail. When I tried to use ours, it had to match up with the email address it was sent to (my husband's email, for some reason) and they do verify it.

In the end I didn't end up using it, because we are going the first week of December, and by the time I called last month, the Disneyland Hotel was sold out of pin code rooms, and the Grand Californian only had concierge rooms available using the pin code (couldn't afford those rooms even with a pin code!). We could have used it to stay in the Paradise Pier hotel, but we really wanted to stay in the Grand Californian for the Xmas decorations, so I ended up just booking a standard room without using the pin code.

One thing you could try is calling Disneyland and telling them that you want to book a room using the pin code, but can't "find" yours. They may look around and find that they sent you one via email that you missed somehow. It is worth a try at least.
