The dinner guests were sitting around the table discussing life.

One man, a CEO, decided to explain the problem with education. He argued, "What's a kid going to learn from someone who decided his best option in life was to become a teacher?"

He reminded the other dinner guests what they say about teachers: "Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach."

To stress his point he said to another guest; "You're a teacher, Susan. Be honest. What do you make?"

Susan, who had a reputation for honesty and frankness replied, "You want to know what I make? "I make kids work harder than they ever thought they could. I make a C+ feel like the winner of the Congressional Medal of Honor. I make kids sit through 40 minutes of study hall in absolute silence.

"You want to know what I make?
I make kids wonder.
I make them question.
I make them criticize
I make them apologize and mean it.
I make them write
I make them read, read, read.
I make them show all their work in math and perfect their final drafts in English.
I make them understand that if you have the brains, and follow your heart,
and if someone ever tries to judge you by what you make, you must pay
no attention because they just didn't learn."

Susan paused and then continued.
"You want to know what I make?
I MAKE A DIFFERENCE.'
What do you make?"

THIS IS WORTH SENDING TO EVERY TEACHER YOU KNOW.
THERE IS MUCH TRUTH IN THAT STATEMENT.
"Teachers make every other profession possible!"

Bravo! Thanks for sharing this with us!!! :sunny:

What these hotshot Ceo's fail to remember is without someone teaching them
they would not be where they are today. It's no wonder teaching is loosing so many people to other fields when you get no respect. These people better be glad we love what we do or no one would be doing it. Then where
would we be. We would all like more money but money is not everything.
Done forty years and proud of it!

Very true but in my case, I had to give up teaching for a higher pay scale. I was a teacher for 7 years. When my DW(girlfriend at the time) and I were talking marriage, we both came to the conclusion that we could not afford to live on my teaching salary. BTW, this was LAUSD. So, I went back to school and finished my engineering degree.

So, you're right, money isn't everything. But it does play a big part in our lives. Since we knew were going to get married, buy a house, and raise kids some day(which we have 2), I had to look for a higher paying career.

Unfortunately, this is the grim reality for me... Boy, I miss teaching!

Thank you!!! I've been teaching for 10 years and this year I feel like I've finally hit my stride! I love what I do!!! Your post just reinforced that! Thank you again!!!

Thank you from a teacher!!!

Thank-you!

lap3 you can always go back into the classroom later in your career. One of the most loved teachers at our school was a retired engineer. He could really get the kids excited about science. It is never to late to do the thing you love.

Thanks. Whenever it all feels like too much, and I am so stressed about bills, discipline, parents and NCLB, and I feel like I just HAVE to find another career..............sometimes I really need something just like that. It helps when I see a great article, or a parent compliments me, or another professional does, or a former student remembers me, or a current student hugs me..................sometimes I can just look around my classroom and say, "This is exactly what I wanted" and feel a deep satisfaction..........but sometimes I need the other stuff too!

Thank you! I have been teaching for 29 years and I can honestly say I will go to my grave richer from the experiences of watching a child's eyes light up when he "GETS IT" and realizes those letters make a word! You can never put a dollar amount on that!

I also gave up teaching to make more money and got an engineering degree. But I love engineering.

We should always do what we love. Having to get up and work at something you don't like really drains you. In June one of my former inner city students came by my room with his letter of acceptance to Marquette. He will be the first in his family to not only finish high school but to go to college. All of us
who had taught him were so proud! Too bad this couldn't makethe news instead of all the violence.
