What sort of other training do you do to prep?

Because of the weather and long dark days - I haven't been out at all. I did a half yesterday and despite being very winded and out of the breath most of the race (I had taken a Tylenol before and feeling a cold hanging on me) I did set a pr - yeah!

I have been doing Insanity workouts and they are great for the lower body...but of course they cannot train you for a race. I really am over the treadmill. I think I am still not over the fact that I did 23.2 miles on the thing back in Dec to prep for the Dopey - and I am having a really hard time even doing a mile on it! I want to go out but I cannot.

So aside from Insanity - which is great...it wont help me run faster, maybe stronger but not faster.

What do you guys do to prep?

First of all, Congrats on PRing at the half!

I have continued to run outside. I joined a training group for the Pittsburgh Marathon and we've been running outdoors on weekends and one day a week since December. After Dopey, I took a couple of weeks off, but once I got back into it, I continued to run outdoors. I think I've done a couple of shorter runs on the treadmill due to weather, but we've still done the long runs outside in the cold, snow, and ice. It wasn't easy, but still better than the treadmill. Running with the group sort of makes me feel like I have to get out there and do it, otherwise, I might just shrug it off.

I don't know how bad it got where you are - with ice and snow...but there was no ground here to actually run on. It was covered with snow and ice...and I have this fear of falling. Plus, I train in a campground with a lot of rolling hilly paved trails..they are NOT cared for off season and the place is a ghost town in winter. If I fall...well...no one is around and my cell phone doesn't pick up in some places there.

So I have nixed the outdoors. Today is one of the nicer days but I will be working later plus I did the half yesterday.

Tomorrow we are suppose to get more snow plus again on Wednesday...

So the nicer days are far and few between. I am guessing, it wont be until mid March before I can get out.

I run 6 days a week, ice, snow or sun. I will take a day off if the snow/ice is brand new. Other than that, I just slow down.

I'm in Pittsburgh and this is the first weekend since Marathon weekend that I have seen our yard. I've run in snow and ice. It's not easy, but you just go slower. I can understand not wanting to run in the campground, but maybe there is a better area that you could run in. I drive anywhere from 10-20 miles to get to a place to run with our group. It's not ideal, but it's better than running alone and on a treadmill. Perhaps there might be a running group in your area somewhere? It really does help to keep you motivated.

Running in the snow/ice means something different to everyone. I have lived in places where the snow/ice melted quickly, or with cleared trails even in the worst weather. I have also lived in places that got so much snow that there was no place to run outside in the winter but the middle of the road, as road shoulders became 8 foot tall snow walls.

Currently, I run when the streets are safe enough, otherwise I spend the same time that I would running on my elliptical. I also do P90X until it is time to start my speed work in the late spring.

My only strength training is P90X. It is more than sufficient for distance running. If you are training for distances shorter than the mile, more intense strength training will help.
