What size ziploc for used WDW poncho?

We tried those dollar shop disposable ponchos but I have to tell you..rain in Florida is like no other..when it rains it RAINS! those flimsy little dollar shop ponchos were not worth the buck I payed for them..they blew up at the back or front and the hood never stayed up..we ended up trashing them and buying the Disney ponchos..much bigger and better and kept you drier. Just My opinion :)

We have done the dollar/toss route and now I just use our Disney ones, they work much better. That said we have no problems folding them and putting them in quart size bags. Perfect fit. I like to use freezer bags because they are stronger. But putting it in your bag is going to be tight. I just measured mine and poncho (not the zip part of bag) is 6" x 7" x 2.5". You could fit it and not much else in your bag so depends on what else you will have.

Thats where the 99cent jobs excel. Toss them.

We bring 3 per person per trip. bring one for each person in a bag when we leave in the AM and the rest stay in the room.

Depending on how the day/rain plays out we either stash the ponchos in a gift shop bag if it looks like we might need them again or toss them if we think that's going to be it. the 99cent ones are about 2.5" square and about 1/3" thick. lay them flat in the bottom of the pack and it's like they aren't even there.

I normally don't like the cheap disposable junk but in this case, it's well worth the trash can route and not having to worry about dealing with a bunch of wet ponchos if the sky / radar has cleared up.

Maybe I'm not reading this right, but if the plan is to get a poncho at the Dollar Store and throw it out, and therefore not take a plastic bag with you during the day at the park -- that won't work. When we were in line for Living With The Land, the cast member said we had to take the ponchos off before boarding the ride. You had to have a bag with you to stick the poncho in, unless you wanted to be holding a wet poncho during the ride. You can't just throw it out in the middle of the day if it's still raining outside.
Correct, you didn't read it right.
I agree with the gallon size bag unless you are a true expert and quick roller-upper. I can now fit our two adult Disney yellow ponchos into a gallon bag after they are dried and we're back in the room and I have the entire bed to fold them up on.

I agree with the sentiments of the "cheapo" ponchos and still needing a bag. It could rain at noon and if you throw the cheapo away and then it rains at two, do you have another cheapo with you? And if it rains at 4, another one?

Thankfully, if you do throw away the cheap ones, Disney does recycle all trash so the plastic doesn't go into a landfill somewhere.

See above.

Also, if it's just sprinkling / we're going to the next ride or area over, we don't use a poncho. Getting a bit wet isn't a big deal to us, getting soaked is.

I just take one of those string strap backpack bags and have one of the older kids wear it. :)

Yep. Kali is the only ride I would pull out a poncho for. This year we have planned it out right. We are making Kali the last ride at AK and going straight to BB after.

OK, weird question - I've never been to WDW when it was so wet I needed a poncho. April might be different, though. I know about buying disposable ponchos at home before the trip, but I'm inclined to gamble and just buy a WDW poncho onsite if/when I need one.

So, when the storm passes and I take off said poncho and want to put it away for later use, how big a ziploc bag do I need for it? Quart size? Sandwich bag? How small will it (easily) fold up? I carry a crossbody bag about 7 x 9 x 3, not a huge bag/backpack for stowing things, so I'm hoping the poncho will be easy enough to fold and stash when not in use.
Maybe my idea is not environmentally friendly, but do you really plan on keeping the Disney poncho after the trip?

If the Disney poncho costs $10, you can buy 10- $.99 ponchos that are smaller than a pack of tissues and have fewer worries.

Most everyone at Disney looks silly walking in the rain. More so after the rain when folks are walking and attempting to dry off their gear.

But if you you'd like to be more environmentally conscious, purchase a waterproof slicker at home that you can use while not at Disney.

We do both depending on time of year we are traveling.

On days when rain is obvious, we use a 'proper' rain jacket, but we also carry those $.99 kind when days begin with sunny weather that suddenly (and it will) turn into a passing rain shower.

Of course, the only issue with a rain jacket versus a poncho is length of coverage over your body.

But more important than rain jacket is what to do with your feet? Wet socks and shoes are a breeding ground for blisters and other problems.

Wow, I'm pleasantly surprised by how long this thread had gotten! Really appreciating all the feedback.

Thanks for the visual aid. What I actually figured I would do is put the poncho in a ziploc then put the ziploc in a Disney plastic shopping bag and hang it through the strap of my crossbody bag (I do that with WDW shopping bags anyway if I purchase something). I figure ziploc in the shopping bag to keep anything else I have/toss in there from getting wet.

I just take one of those string strap backpack bags and have one of the older kids wear it. :)

LOL, if I had a kid (or a DH, or a stroller...) I'd totally do that. :thumbsup2

I understand the plusses to having a rain jacket, but I don't want to drag a jacket around all day, especially if it might not even rain. And I don't mind a little rain, or even a brief downpour (we had a couple of those in 2004 and just did an indoor attraction or lunch until it passed). I just want to be prepared, since it's my first non-Winter trip.

Thanks, all!

Agreed. We have nylon ones, about 3 mils think with snaps down each side to close them. Hoods as well. We've had them for at least 12 years.

Not the OP but we still have our Disney yellow rain ponchos so you can see how many years at the minimum. We dry them out in the room, reuse them on our trips, then bring them home and dry them out for a few more days. Pack them away and we even have washed them (delicate cycle) and then dried them out again. And we have even reused those "throw them away" ponchos as well and have washed them and dried them too.

So ponchos can be tossed but they don't have to be.

We have some that we bought in 2010 and we still use those same ones. We have the $8.99 Coleman brand from Walmart. We just fold them up when they get wet and stick them in a shopping plastic bag.
