what should she tell him?

My friend asked me about this and I told her I would ask here for her.

We are in 10th grade. There is one guy, "S", that liked my friend, "K", last year. We are not sure if he still does, but it is very possible. We think he likes another friend of mine,"E", but she has a boyfriend, so he won't (or should I say can't) ask her to it. There is a holiday ball a few days before christmas that my school is having. K is afraid that S will ask her (I know, the pains of having a guy want to go to a dance with you LOL). She doesn't like S anymore than friends at the very most, but she does NOT want to go to the ball with him. She can't tell him that she already has a date because she doesn't and if he goes to the ball, he will find out that she lied. It is kind of tricky situation. How do you nicely tell someone that you don't want to go to a dance with them? She is the type that hates to say no to anyone. If she knew he was going to ask her, she would try and avoid him. If he does ask, what should she say without being mean? We were trying to think of solutions on the bus, but couldn't think of any. Unless you count the ones that sounded incredibly mean (and we didn't even have the intentions of being mean). TIA!!!

To a guy -- I used to be one, many years ago -- any excuse sounds like "Please ask me again sometime." Just say no, and he'll figure it out -- he sounds like a smart guy (after all, he likes your friend, so he must be smart, right? )

Thanks for the tips. Now we just have to work on how she says it and the look on her face when she says it. Knowing her, she'll get this totally disgusted look on her face, or she'll say it in a way that implies asking her again. LOL.

Yes, LoveMe knows what I am talking about. But she also knows that S is very persistant almost to the point of stalking. LOL. And she would not go with him. And BTW, he didn't stalk her until after the ball last year, so this wasn't a problem for her.

Uh no, he didn't start stalking you till later. And even if it was before, the Noel Ball was one of those times when he was off of you.

Just to fill y'all in, last year, S went back and forth between LoveMe and K. He would like LoveMe for a few weeks, then K for a month, then Love Me for a month, then both of them for a few weeks. It just went back and forth like that all year. LOL

tiggerlover: Thanks for the advice. We thought of that today on the bus, but now we have to figure out a way to say it that doesn't sound mean because thats how K is. She will say something and not intend it to be mean, but how she says it, it just sounds like she thinks the thought is repulsive. LOL.

This happened to me in 10th grade too - waaaaaay back in 1984. The guy was so nice and i hated to break his heart. I just said I'd rather be friends. I told him he was great but i had my eye on someone else. I know I hurt him because at our 15 year reunion he wouldn't talk to me and even went out of his way to snub me.

It's hard but it's better than saying yes and having a horrible time. Why doesn't she quick ask someone else?

Hmmm, if this guy pretty much hassles anyone he is interested in and thinks he has a remote possibility of getting together with, maybe she should just go with the hurting his feelings and getting it over with. If he was "stalking" LoveMe, what is to stop him from hassling K if she doesn't totally make herself clear?

No thanks ... I only go to dances w/my friends (and not a date) b/c nobody's disappointed at the end of the night.
