What should I expect different in the South?

We finally did it and bought that house in the South, the deep South. So tell me what should I expect different about being in the South except the weather being warmer?

Different compared to where?

And where in the South did you end up?

Really depends on where in the south you are moving and where you are moving from. Also depends on larger city vs small town vs really small town.

The one piece of advice I can give you is to not complain about how everything is different and better from where you moved. Try to assimilate into the culture and go with the flow. There are a lot of transplants here and the thing that grates on my nerves is someone telling me how we do everything wrong down here.

depending on where you are coming from and where you end up, one thing that I found different is that everything is spaced out here. Lots more open land, much less crowded.

Also, less rushing around. Standing in the line at the deli with my Mom drives me crazy when she visits here because northeast deli's cut meat FAST, which she repeatedly points out. The pace of the retail workforce seems slower here.

I've had grocery store employees bring my groceries to the car.
I don't know if they still do that but...clearly, here in the NE they don't do that, and I was like "get your stinkin hands off my groceries" inside my head until I realized that's just what they do.

And the "ma'am" and "sir" too.
And a generally slower pace of life.

This is what I've noticed, too... and the deli counter is one of the most frustrating things for me, too. There have been several times I want to just say "forget it" and buy the pre-packaged meat! I think that would be very tough for me to get used to.

People talk to each other down here whether you know each other or not. If you are in the waiting room while you car is getting worked on, expect the other customers to start a conversation with you. If you are walking down the sidewalk, people will look you in the eye and smile or say hi. People will talk to you while shopping. It's very normal down here.

Please listen to this. We have many transplants around here and I am so tired of 'things were better where I used to live'. I hear this all of the time. It was not better, it was just different. I understand that you liked it better but that is just because it was your home. This is my home and I don't like to hear it criticised. And besides, you moved here. Unless you are forced to move against your will there must be a reason to like this place.

Really? My NJ grocery store will always take your cart out to your car, and load it up - you just ask the cashier. When I was pregnant, I had to fight them off - lol.
