What rides NOT for kids?

We'll be taking 4 boys (10,7,6,and 4) in March. Which rides would you recommend not doing because they are too scary or most intense than I might anticipate? (We did Haunted Mansion last time and it almost ruined the whole trip. It stopped for 5 minutes next to the screaming head.)

The 10 and 6 year olds are dare devils, but I don't want them to get in over their heads, so to speak. I'm planning to let them do Space Mountain and Splash Mountain and River Rapids.

What about Test Track? Rocking Roller Coaster? Dinosaur? Thunder Mountain?

The 4 and 7 year old are not so brave. For them, I'm on the fence about Pirates of Car. and a few others. Are Splash Mountain and Thunder Mountain too physically intense for a 4 yr old if he is not afraid?

Thank you for any help.

Depending upon your kids:

The Stitch attraction in Tomorrowland spends a great deal of time in complete darkness with Stitch "sneaking" up on you while you're strapped into your seat. There were a lot of screaming kids on that one.

Also, the Cirque Du Soleil show freaked out a lot of kids when we saw. It might be appropriate for 11+ years.

I forgot to add: I'm not a big fan of fat rides but this was the first time I did Big Thunder Mountain and Goofy's Barnstormer. I actually thought parts of Barnstormer were worse than Big Thunder Mountain but it was a lot shorter. I rated BTM a 3 or 4 on a 0-10 scariness scale.

It really depends on the child. What are their fears? Alot of attractions have darkness, thunder and lightning effects, loud noise etc. My oldest ds was afraid of those I listed. We ended up watching alot of shows until he was old enough to diffentiate between real and fantasy. Now he is 11 and goes on everything. His favorites are Rock n roller and Mission space. Our newest edition, ds 8 months, is not afraid of anything. He has gone on everything that doesn't have a height restriction.

Some of the guide books have scare factors listed. I think the one I use to have was something like Disney with kids by Kim Wild.

I have 2 kids, and on our last trip (2003), they were D-5 & S-9. Haunted house scared the bejeezous out of our daughter, as did the Dinasour ride at AK. I think it was mainly because of the darkness, followed by loud noises.

My son loved space mountain, and mission space. I had to stop after 3 times on each, especially mission space (the more I did it, the more it affected my equilibrium). Daughter did not try either one. The whole family enjoyed test track, it's more speed than scary - and you can get a great family picture.

I know this might annoy some, but the Rapids is the most overrated ride at Disney. It takes about 2 minutes, and it's over, and you get a little wet - whoop-de-do. Thank goodness we did FP, as the wait was over 1 hour. Had I waited 1 hour for that ride, I would have been furious. Again, just my opinion. Kids should be fine on the ride.

Sorry I can't answer about the Mountains, but my D-5 did not want to ride them, so I can't say. S-9 loved them all.

Good luck.

I can take any ride you can throw at me (though I don't like to get wet so I tend to avoid water rides), no matter how crazy or scary, but I can say that Dinosaur kind of threw me for a loop. We were doing babyswap so I was riding without a companion and sitting in the back corner. I was fine until this ROAR sounded right next to my ear. It startled me so much I was dazed for the rest of the ride. It's very dark and jerky and the dinos appear very menacing and quite close.

Dinasuar in AK is pretty intense. I guess there are a few point during test track where it could be scary but maybe you could just tell them about them so they are expecting them (truck that looks like it's going to hit them, looks like your going to hit a wall, etc).

Rockin Roller coaster is pretty much a coaster in the dark. The difference from space mountain being that it's got a great soundtrack, doesn't feel like your head is going to get chopped off by passing tracks and it goes upside down. It's pretty short though so maybe they would like it.

I think that if I got caught in HM next to the screaming head taht I would have my kid start making faces back at with whenever it popped up. "Ready, and booga! booga!"

My 8 year old loved space mountain but TOT freaked him out because of the preshow and the queue looked like a doomed basement. He doesn't like anything haunted. We never even went by Haunted Mansion. I'd say stay away from Dinosaur too. My 6 year old tried to jump out of the car. Something about the thought of a large dinosaur chasing you just didn't thrill them. The roller coasters are fast and fun. (At least for us)

I am 30 and I don't even like Space Mountain so you may want to carefully evaluate that ride before you take them. I love Rockin' Roller Coaster and Splash Mountain and all of the other thrill rides. What scared me about Space Mtn. was that the little bar that they have on the ride does not hold you down and I spent the entire ride feeling like I was coming out of my seat. It is also the most herky jerky ride in WDW that my neck and back were killing me when I got off.

As for Splash Mountain if the four year old is adventurous then try it but in your post you said "not so brave" take the four year old to the bridge infront of the big drop and watch the boats come down and then ask if he wants to do it. I have seen to many parents ignoring screaming children and shoving them in those boats and holding them down that I would say do not risk it if they do not want to go. Not only do you ruin their trip but you ruin the ride for everyone else in and around the boat bc they have to spend their time listening to a child scream and cry and cannot hear anything (I would say this goes for all rides).
Bottom line, you should by the WDW for kids by kids guide book and read it with them. It gives accurate descriptions of the rides and then they can decide if it something they would like to do.

Oh, P.S. Pirates of the Caribbean- I rode this for the first time at 5 years old and was HORRIFIED. It scared the bejezzuz out of me. however, I went back the next year at 6 and loved it, so you never know :flower1:

I think you'll definitely want to stay away from Dinosaur... it's very dark and loud and things pop out at you throughout the entire ride. I was terrified (and I was 19 when I first rode it).

Oh, also, It's Tough To Be A Bug is kind of intense (not a ride, it's a show... but lots of giant creepy crawlies).

Pirates is only a little bit scary at the very beginning. So if you tell them what to expect, they should be fine on that one.

Its tough to be a bug scared our then 6 and 4 year old so badly they were near hysterics. AND I had outlined the entire show for them, even told them when the grasshopper would show up and even then, whew, I felt so bad. Our dd's loved Goofy's but I wouldn't do any other coaster with them. I won't do Dinosaur after the first time and DH won't ever do TOT again. Therefore, I think it will be a few years before our girls do either of those.

Some suggested that even snow white's ride scared kids so we didn't even try it.

Our first trip ds was 4 and wasn't a kid who was afraid of much so when I took him on pirates I never imagined he would be scared. Now he is 7 and he won't even try pirates again. I'm not sure what to do to convince him to try again, he has built it up to be so 'big' in his little mind that I don't think he'll ever try!

I'll never forget seeing It's Tough to be a Bug last year. It was such a cute show, but apparently very intense - there were points where I couldn't hear the soundtrack because apparently EVERY single child in the theatre was screaming and crying!

Those poor kids. And I felt so mean for finding it a little teensy bit funny. They'd be fine with the cute stuff and the songs, but then something scary would happen and screaming and crying would ensue, then another song or something else cute, and they'd quiet down, then BOOM! Back to the screaming and crying a second later. It was it's own rollercoaster.

Kali Rapids is a ride for the family. Nothing scary here unless you are afraid of some water.

Splash Mountain isn't scary aside from the drops. If the kids can handle the drop then this is a great ride. My 3yr old was so upset he wasn't tall enough for this one. He plays Splash Mountain in the tub every night with his little action figures in a boat.

One that hasn't been mentioned that has a very intense parts is Honey I Shrunk the Audience. Nothing near Tough to be a Bug but still the snake and the entire 3D thing can freak kids out.

What are their fears? (If you said, I'm sorry I missed it.) Are they afraid of the dark? Fast rides? Going upside down? Things jumping out at them?

Answering these questions could help us help you.

If they are afraid of the dark, know that a lot of harmless rides have dark periods. When my children were small, I bought each of them a very small flashlight that hung around their necks. We had an understanding that anytime they felt afraid, they could turn on their flashlight but only to shine it at their own laps or feet. If the were to shine it anywhere else, they would lose their flashlight. It worked wonders for my kids. Now THEY had the control. The first few days in WDW the lights were on quite frequently shinining down at their feet. After a day or two, my son didn't even want to wear his anymore (he was 6). My daugher (3) kept wearing hers but rarely ever used it. What made them this way at WDW when they were not afraid of the dark anywhere else? The Snow White ride. It frightened them quite a bit the year before.

As far as really scary rides: Dinosaur, Tower of Terr and Stitch are the only 3 I can think of. If they are frightened at all, you will probably want to avoid these three.

We don't think of HM as scary, but after the Snow White experience my kids would not ride HM until they were older anyway.

PofC is not scary, but it does have that very dark section at the very beginning. My kids did well if I could tell them exactly what was going to happen. So I explained: "it is very dark, nothing will jump out at you and then we have a small downhill ride section, then the dark part is over". I would hold them tight and they learned to trust me that I knew what was going to happen. :smooth:

Ellen's Energy in EPCOT is dark in spots with lots of very large stinky dinosaurs, but they do not jump at you or threaten you in any way - just warn your kids they are there beforehand.

Coasters:
Rock N Roll Coaster is a true coaster. It goes fast, upside down and it is dark with black light effects. Only you can judge if your kids will like it or not. The younger ones won't be tall enough anyway. My son loves it and has since he was tall enough to ride. My daughter hates it - she doesn't like going upside down.

BTMRR & Splash Mtn - my kids have loved these from the time they were small. There is nothing scary about them - things don't jump out at you, no monsters, no really dark sections, etc. They do behave like coasters and log flumes - there are drops and stuff, but my kids did fine. Their first time on them we held each of them tight to give them a little extra security and we haven't had to since.

Goofy's - my husband says this one is worse than BTMRR! It is very jerky and takes your stomach away.

Space Mtn - again the little ones are probably too short. But it is total darkness, but a smooth ride. It is a thrill one, however. Again, my kids loved it from the time they were big enough to ride it.

I guess my best piece of advice is this: don't make them ride anything they don't want to ride! If they are frightened before they get on, it will only get worse once the ride starts no matter what you do. If your offers of addtional security (the light and a tight hug throughout the ride for instance) are not enough, please don't push it. You may think I am silly for stressing this point, but I have seen many parents do it and then be amazed when their kids were near panic before the ride was over. If you can ride it first and you can explain to them exactly what happens and when (and maybe again whisper it in their ear as the ride progresses) that may help them. Do the kid swap otherwise.

There is a very good book out there (or there was several years ago) called
Walt Disney World with Kids by Kim Wright Wiley. This auther looks at every single ride and gives it a "scariness factor" in addition to age guides and describing the ride. I highly recommend this book.....I just looked on Amazon and there is a 2004 edition.

Hope your trip is magical!

Don't you hate that?! My 13 year old brother absolutely REFUSES to go on Space Mountain, even though he LOVES RnR, ToT, Splash, Big Thunder... it's ridiculous! He's built it up in his mind as the ultimate frightening experience and refuses to try it. It's funny, because Space is so much less intense than the other rides he adores.

Thanks everyone! I am going to print this and keep it for our trip!

Thanks for the suggestion about the flashlights. Believe it or not, I had bought them for the boys after our last wdw trip (Haunted Mansion Mistake!) but I had forgotten about them. I'll throw them on in the suitcase now.

Several asked: What are their Fears? MAinly, yes, the Dark, things jumping out at them and the idea that something will actually TOUCH them. 4 yr old has been watching the planning DVD and is intrigued by Pirates, but is still a little nervous that the pirates might touch him somehow.

Never Fear: I will not force my kids to go on anything they were afraid of. If I were that kind of parent, I wouldn't spend my time researching this. There will be 4 boys and 3 adults so all the kids will always have the option of sitting one out with a safe adult--even at the last minute.
What worries me most is letting them on something and not knowing it would be scary and you all have helped a lot. Plus, it sounds like Thunder Mountain and Rockin Roller Coaster are actually Tamer than I thought.

I'll definitely get that book. Thanks!

My 5 year old went on the Haunted Mansion, Test Track and Big Thunder Mountain in December. She was too afraid back in August. We didn't even try Dinosaur or Stitch because I thought she would be afraid. She was also afraid of Journey Into Your Imagination in August because Figment is stinky and there is a loud burst of light and air at the end. She carries a small penlight with her on dark rides and we encourage her to scream really loud on the thrill rides. I'm hoping that she'll be up for Splash Mountain again next time.

When DD was five, she rode everything she was tall enough for incl. splash mtn, space mtn, btmrr (she was too short for RNR coaster and TOT.) When she was 7, she rode everything except TOT. She loves rollercoaster.

When her younger sister was two, she enjoyed everything she was tall enough for. When she was 4, although tall enough, she wanted no part of splash mtn, BTMRR, SPace mtn, dinosaur. But she loved everything else including haunted mansion, goofy barnstormer, test track, haunted mansion etc.

Mission space and stitch were not open yet when we went.

Almost forgot - they were both freaked out by ITTBAB our first trip, so we skipped HISTA too. Didn't attempt either one our second trip.

Isn't the current height requirement for TOT 40" and Space Mountain 44"? I guess it must have changed since your DD was 5. The TOT CMs make my DD go through the line and baby swap at the chicken exit because she's tall enough to ride, but not brave enough .

I'd say Dinosaur would be too frightening.

Test Track probably ok for the oldest two, might scare the youngest but if they are brave go for it.

Rockin Rollercoster probably just the oldest.

Tower of Terror I'd avoid for them all

BTM railroad is pretty tame. Probably ok for them all.

Splash Mountain is worth going on just for the story. I think your youngest would enjoy it and they really wouldn't even know when they were going to do the big drop.

Space Mountain probably oldest three ok for.

Pirates ok for them all. Another good story for all the kids.
