One thing the "big boss" said to J was that he should start looking into joining business organizations and do some volunteer work , the company likes its managers to set a good example. DH has never done anything like this before ( it was required in my house) and doesnt know where to start.

What organizations should he start with or what organizations do you belong to?

My dh is not a big joiner so instead of clubs (Rotary, Shriners, Lions etc.), he does things like volunteer highway cleanup (he coordinates that for our church) . "Habitat for Humanity" is another great work oriented volunteer op. We also have a community trail being built that has a volunteer task force. I don't know if your dh is like mine - but those kinds of things are much more appealing to him, but would still look good. He could also chair a PTA event at school - playground project etc.

Well, I would think the chamber of commerce is the place to start. From there he could get involved in different volunteer stuff.....maybe the River festival, as that is a big Boise business thing.

I second the Habitat for Humanity idea. Other groups that can always use help are the Salvation Army, United Way, Red Cross, Boys and Girls Clubs, scouting organizations, or local food banks and homeless shelters.

Your DH could also look at the types of donations and corporate support his company has provided over the years and work from that list or find organizations similar in your area to volunteer his time and expertise.

Judy from Boise has the right idea. I work for an organization that functions as the Chamber of Commerce in name, but we really are an economic development organization. We have a Manufacturer's Council which is a group of local manufacturers who meet approximately 6 times a year to network and discuss manufacturing issues in our area. They even have site tours of local manufacturing facilities. I am currently in the process of assisting in the planning of their Summit coming up in June. If you want specific information on what they do, pm me and I will send you a link to our info.

Good luck!

OK after re-reading your post, I see that you are looking for community type organizations. I think the United Way is a good idea, or how about mentoring in schools at the High School level. I know around here, most manufacturers are trying to make sure the upcoming labor force is skilled. There are so many career paths that sometimes manufacturing is not the career path of choice.

most companies like to see their management staff giving back to the community in some way - the Jaycees, Lions, Elks, Kiwanis, etc all are clubs that help to better their communities. Most of them you can be as involved in as you want to be.

Well, find something that works with the business....

For example my DH works for a very major health company.. he volunteers at a non profit health clinic, and goes door to door promoting a free clinic, childrens immunizations, and HIV awareness.

It looks great, feels great and gives back. No, it wasn't suggested either,by a boss, but as a kindness thing.
