What on earth is WRONG with these people?

Last night my son's 4th grade class had an energy fair. The students were doing some kind of skit talking about energy conservation.

One little girl's parents showed up rip roaring drunk and were very disruptive. Whenever their daughter spoke they would hoot and holler and yell "Go Baby!". The poor little girl had tears in her eyes at first, but by the end of the skit they were running down her cheeks. Just watching her broke my heart, I swear I almost started crying myself! The parents reeked of booze and were just obnoxious. The father went up to the teacher and gave her a big hug and slurred something about her being a such a great teacher. The teacher actually asked to see them out in the hall, and we could hear her reading them the riot act. Not only that, but the teacher told them she was not going to let their daughter get in the car with them to go home. She finally called a cab for them. It really put a damper on the evening for all of us parents.

What really impressed me though was the way the other students gathered around her and tried to comfort her. It could have so easily gone the other way, as we all know kids can be so cruel. I certainly hope they have learned their lesson, but sadly, I bet they will pull this again. :(

Oh that's awful. Poor little girl. :( I hope her parents shape up and become real parents, but it doesn't sound hopeful. I am glad this was seen by her teacher so perhaps some legal action can be taken.

That poor child! Thank goodness the teacher wasn't afraid to speak her mind and call a cab. :(

How sad and appalling! Has anyone thought about contacting child saftey officials?

I hate it when parents can't get their acts together to act like parents.

That poor little girl. :(

OMG, that is so incredibly sad! I don't know what I would have done if I had wittnessed something like that. Bless that poor little girl's heart. Thoughts and prayers go out to her. Thank goodness that teacher did not ignore the situation and decided to get involved!

I am literally fighting tears with this. Good Lord. Thank goodness that teacher did speak her mind, and did put them all in a cab.

Kudos to the kids, it could have been much much uglier. I wonder if they were so empathetic because this is not a rare occurrence? :(

Some people never learn how deeply their actions affect their children. Sadly I doubt this is the first or last time this will happen. Thank goodness she got support from her friends.

How lucky that girl was to have a teacher like that. Hopefully the parents will come to their senses & seek help!

That poor child! :(

I hope this wasn't the same little girl you had a thread about not too long ago (inappropriate kiss).:(

My heart breaks for that child!!:(

But thank GOD for that teacher!!:D

Kudos to the teacher for not letting them drive home with the little girl. Also great to hear how the other students tried to comfort her.

Sad story.

browneyes, thankfully, it's not the same child. The "inappropriate kiss" was a girl at my older daughter's middle school. Speaking of which, the counselor that I called must have said something to that father because my neighbor that drives my daughter everyday said she has not seen the father kiss her like that in quite awhile. He still drops her off, but there is no kissing involved.

I am sitting here fighting back tears. This has just broken my heart. Just imagining the embarassment and hurt that the little girl must have felt.

Kudos for the teacher. And kudos also for the other children for being so supportive and understanding.

Did anyone call DCF?? These people are clearly a danger to that child as parents.

My son told me that the little girl didn't come to school today. :(

I called my sister who works for DCFS and asked her about these people. She is not a social worker, she only works as a media liason for DCFS, but she is going to check into this for me.

Also, the teacher is really up on things, and I'm sure she isn't going to let this slide. She is the same woman who adopted one of her students (as well as the girl's sister) when they were suddenly orphaned. She has great compassion for kids and I know she'll do the right thing.

Jeafl,

One problem he might have is alcoholism :( Otherwise, he is an extremely rude person :( I pity children who have parents like this.

PAX,
Diane
