I was just wondering what % of DIS members, that are currently registered, maintain a fairly active posting status. Does Pete and the staff ever deactivate someone who hasn't posted for a year or more? Just wondering.
:charac2:

I've stopped posting for fairly long stretches, and my account is always here when I come back. I don't think anyone has ever even missed me when I've been gone!

I was the same as Barb, taking time off but it wasn't for more than a few months. Just looking at a few of recent DIS'ers posts and counters I would say they stay active. I have no idea what the percentages are but it would be interesting to find out!

I missed you. I remember thinking, "where is Barb D?" It's nice to have you back again. :D

My bet would be that it is a pretty small percentage of 70,000+ who registered. At one time, the member list was available and it would be page after page of names that had been registered but never posted or posted once or twice. It doesn't seem like names get culled, hence the high registered member number.

I don't think so. As you can see by the date I registered and the number of my posts -- I don't post very often.

But I do visit several times a day!::yes:: ::yes::

I've often wondered about the numbers too. Guess it's the analyst in me. But I would love to see what % is active.

I to don't post much, reply some post but mostly enjoy coming here daily and reading some of the post. I did post more before our trip in Sept. and now planning for our Aug. 2005 trip so might be posting more then. But for now I just like coming here and reading the post and getting some good info. I guess at this rate I won't get tagged either.

Just a hunch...80% of posts come from 20% of Dis-ers:scratchin :confused3

Speaking of percentages: Did you know that:

... that 87 percent of all statistics are made up on the spot?

...73 percent of all people know that.

...the other 55 percent just don't care.

(Joke--- Sorry couldn't resist.)

I think it is VERY low -

like maybe .5% or .75% (not even 1%)
1% of 70,000 is 700 people.
I don't think that even 700 people post here regularly.

Well, I can tell you at least two of the members registered NEVER have posted, and one posts very infrequently. (My family members.)

I think I've heard that members who have been banned are not removed from the member list - but it's not accessible right now so I can't check. So that takes down the number of posters a bit too. ;)

While we keep statistics on a lot of things, this isn't one of them. What we have found is members frequently post before a trip, then they don't post for a year or more and start posting again before the next trip. That is one of the reasons we don't prune user names
Certainly the number is far higher than the 1% someone mentioned, that wouldn't even come close to supporting the numbers of posts we see every day.
I think a lot of people think of this question in terms of the community board and what they see here. The trip planning boards have a bit of a different pattern to them.

It doesnt look like anyone gets deactivated. When the calendar was up and we were able to post individual birthdays there were a large number of people who registered and never posted or only had a few post years back--and those are only the ones that listed their birthdays, Im sure there are others who never listed it so they didnt show up on the calendar.

commenting on what dcg317 said generally speaking the registered users and unregistered users seem to be roughly equal at any point in time. For example on this sunday evening we have about 900 users on line, 500 registered and 400 unregistered.

WebmasterAlex, if you're still following this thread, how many simultaneous users can be logged onto the boards before the "Sorry, the server is busy" message comes up? Just curious. :scratchin

I wish I knew a solid answer for that travelbug. A lot depends on what people are doing. I have seen it go as high as 1500 and still working fine but I have seen it go busy at as low as 900 or a 1000. If a bunch of people post at the same time it causes a lot more load than if people are just reading.

I can't answer your question. All I know is that:

When I was afraid, the people here gave me courage.

When I was in pain, the people here gave me comfort.

When I was feeling weak, the people here gave me strenth.

When I needed faith, the people here gave me prayers.

Whatever percentage of people post here, it's the perfect pecentage for me.
