I posted this on another thread, but the subject deserves it's own discussion. popcorn:: :hyper2: popcorn::

Award season is coming up. :hyper: A friend is on the Sag Awards nominating committee so I got to see more movies with then than I normally go to. Of the ones I got to watch these are my favorite in order:

Zero Dark Thirty - this will be the one to beat at the Oscars. I really, really wanted to see this one. It isn't out in the theatres yet. It's sweeping all the awards. It got New York Film Critics Circle, National Board of Review, Boston Film Critics and New York Online Critics as the Washington D.C. Area Film Critics Association awards for Best Film, with Kathryn Bigelow as Best Director.

It's the 10 year long hunt for Osama Bin Laden, but it's not in normal, dry documentary format. It follows the one woman on the CIA whose tenacity was responsible for finding Bin Laden & bringing him down. To me, because of the subject matter, it is one of the most important, current movies out and every American should see it. There is some extreme violence during the first 30 minutes showing what it took to get information, (think Abu Ghraib,) but as an American & a NYer, I am proud of the movie. I also thought the film handled the Seal Team 6's take down of Bin Laden well, without being needlessly gratuitous, doing something to inflame our enemies who will be incensed & inflamed anyway. How accurate & close to the truth, remains to be seen as most of the info is supposed to be classified. :ssst:

Lincoln - maybe I'm just in a patriotic mood, but I really liked this film. Daniel Day Lewis was excellent, and should get all the awards for Best Actor (IMO). Sally Field should be nominated for Best Supporting actress. The film made me misty-eyed at the end and proud (again) of being an American. :yay:

Les Miserable - comes in third. But, that's because of Russell Crowe's weak singing, and I prefer the Broadway interpretation to how Hugh Jackman played the lead. Yet, Anne Hathaway will squeeze out Sally Field and win the Best Supporting Actress Award. I do think the tight cast should win for Best Ensemble.

Silver Linings Playbook - rounds out my top picks. I hated the description of the film and almost didn't see it. But, it turned out to be such a "feel good" movie. :cloud9: I actually liked it a lot. :thumbsup2 Best acting by Robert DeNiro in decades. To me, Jennifer Lawrence edges out Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty,) for the win for Best Actress.

Another film I liked is Hitchcock. It isn't really about the making of Psycho so much as it is about the relationship between Alfred Hitchcock & his wife, who was instrumental in getting the film made. I loved Helen Mirren. :thumbsup2

A couple films I am so-so about are The Impossible. It started out as a great movie, then fell flat and almost unbelievable, even though it was based on a true story of some of the Thailand tsunami survivors.

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, was nice, but I felt I need to be in my 60's

to really appreciate the nuances of aging.

I couldn't get into Cloud Atlas, or Anna Karenina. :confused3

Kind of dragged my daughter to go see Argo with me. By the end, she was practically gripping my arm, and she whispered in my ear, "They do make it out, right?" We both liked it a lot.

Loved Argo and The Life of Pi and have midnight tickets for The Hobbit!:thumbsup2

The Hobbit, This is 40, Les Mis... Oh so many this Christmas season!

I do need to see Lincoln too.

I couldn't get into Cloud Atlas,

I enjoyed The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel too and I'm not quite that old ;) Couldn't stand Bill Nighy's wife in that movie (she was the Prime Minister in a couple episodes of Doctor Who).. can't think of her name at the moment.

Cloud Atlas was "meh" to me as well. I wanted to like it. I really did.

The Hobbit, Zero Dark Thirty (hubby keeps talking about this!), Lincoln (was INCREDIBLE!), and Les Miserable. I love Anne Hathaway.

The last movie I saw in the theater was Return of the King. Next one will be The Hobbit. :lmao:

What movies have been your favorites, duds or can't wait to see? popcorn::

I saw Lincoln and thought it was very good.
I thought Argo was fantastic though, much better than Lincoln. I was on the edge of my seat, filled with anxiety the whole movie, even though you know what happens. My favorite of the year.
Silver Linings Playbook(though that name makes me crazy), Zero Dark Thirty and Hitchcock are all on my must see list. So is This is 40.
I have no interest in Les Mis..I did until I saw the trailer and I didn't like the singing at all. AT ALL. I'll watch in on DVD.

I want to see the one with Billy Crystal and Bette Midler. I like them both. Lone Ranger looks good as well

Not sure what else is coming out soon, but looking at PP's lists-I want to see the new Die Hard and, Catching Fire, Despicable Me. I never watched any Star Trek, but LOVED the last one so if there's a new one coming out, I'm all over it.
Iron Man 3, yes.
Oz-I couldn't tell from the trailer if I wnat to see it or not..
NO interest in The Hobbit or Life of Pi, not even for free.

I saw Skyfall, Argo, and Lincoln in the past few weeks and was really happy with them all. (I loved the fact that they kept the language fairly "original" in Lincoln. DS18 turned to me about ten minutes into it and said, "Did Shakespeare write this? It's hard to understand.:rotfl2:)

I'm thrilled to see Hobbit and Silver Linings Playbook (although I also hate the name...)

Terri

I'm looking forward to:

The Great Gatsby
Oz The Great and Powerful
Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters

Oh I forgot about Django Unchained!

Last 2 movies I've really been excited about were:

Argo & True Grit, and neither disappointed :thumbsup2

We had free tickets to Rise of The Guardians, and even that was too expensive.
