While dicussing the merits of Brokeback Mountain and Crash on another thread , I was dicussing movies and art , and how a movie can change your life.

My life was changed by the movie Harold and Maude , way back in the 70s. It is the story of a teenager who fall in love with an 80 years old women. it i a very touching and tender comedie ( often Hilarious !) about how it can be difficult to fit in , and how one chance meeting ( during a funeral !) can change your life forever. I saw the movie maybe 20 times at the art movie place near my house in montréal , and to this day , I still cannot listen to a Cat Steven song without having seens from the movie appearing in front of me. I learned a lot about my self in Harold and Maude.

What movie changed your life and why ?

Poltergiest! It made me afraid of clowns and putting my feet under a bed. Seriously, all my clown toys had to sleep in my parents room.:rotfl2:Clowns give me the heebie be jeebies!

You know, I have been thinking and thinking, and I can't think of a movie that changed my life. LOTS of books, but I can't recall a movie ever having had that same effect.

I'm off to do some research.... I've seen hundreds of movies, so maybe I'll think of one! ;)

It's hard to pick just one.

"His Girl Friday" made me a diehard Cary Grant fan. "The Godfather" started my obsession with mafia movies.

Not very deep answers, but there you go. :teeth:

I don't think it changed my life but Dead Man Walking really got me thinking about capital punishment.

I don't know that it changed my life, but American Beauty definitely struck a chord and put me back in touch with some things that had been lost on me.

I can't think of any movies that have changed my life. I just watch them for entertainment.

I am deathly afraid of aliens and dinosaurs. I credit Close Encounters of the Third Kind (too young when I was exposed to it, lol) and Jurassic Park for those fears.

Seriously none have changed my life, but many have caused me to think...Crash, The Piano, A Beautiful Mind...I could go on and on.

There are probably many movies that influenced my life over the years. But my fave movie has been the movie that comes closest to changing my life. That movie is "Its a Wonderful Life". It always gets me thinking about how important I am and how even though I am just one person, I affect many other people around me. It changed my thinking to see how important I am and to appreciate all the little things in life.

Check out "Everything is Illuminated." CLEVER ... and it has some startling insights into life's journey. The book is magnificently written, too ... the author was 24 and was shortlisted for the National Book Award for this, his first effort.

P.S. It also stars Frodo, if you're a Lord-of-the-Rings person :)

A-Ha! I thought of one. So far. "Killing Us Softly"- it's a documentary by Jean Kilbourne about how women are portrayed in advertising. Honestly, before I saw this I had never noticed many subtle things about ads and images, and now I see it EVERYWHERE. :furious:

The closest would have to be 'The Diary of Anne Frank'--although I read the book right before I saw the movie. I was around 10, maybe. Blew my mind. I can remember images that changed the way I saw the world, songs and books as well--but not a lot in the way of movies (although tons have really touched me or made me think about an issue in a different way).

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind definitely put some things in to perspective for me in a very personal way. I love, love, LOVE that movie - and I will be eternally grateful (pun intended ;) ) to the people that made that film.

Psycho - It made taking a shower very difficult for a long time. :rotfl2:

Maybe I should have said " movies that had an impact onyour life" instead of "changed your life". That said , maybe the movies dont change our lifes , but they certaily change our point of view. Some films , you really need to scartch the surface to discover amazing things !

"IT" by Stephen King only added to my dislike of clowns! Pennywise was such a creepy clown (They all float down here....)It didn't change my life, but only made me never want to see another clown for the rest of my life!!!

The Power of One, a movie about apartheid in South Africa. Morgan Freeman and Steven Dorff starred. It is a movie about the impact ONE person can have on many, and how they can accomplish great things. It has changed the way I look at life. I never think I don't make a difference; I realize that my actions, wherever and whenever, can impact someone's life in a way I could never imagine.

ETA: The book, Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albolm, just reinforced this way of thinking.

"All the President's Men" The movie about Woodward and Bernstein finding out about Watergate. I saw this movie on a high school fieldtrip. It really opened my eyes and made me think about government.

I just thought of another one as I was hitting submit. "Hotel Rwanda" struck a chord with me.

I read this book and found it to predictable and did not enjoy it.
