What movie would you call "universally loved"?

Gone with the Wind
Wizard of Oz
It's a Wonderful Life
Miracle of 34th Street

I don't get Back to the Future it's a great movie but I'm not sure it's that popular

Yeah - I'm thinking there is always going to be someone who hates it.

I hate ET, Sound of Music, Titanic, Wizard of Oz, It's a Wonderful Life and I REALLY REALLY REALLY DESPISE Forrest Gump. I think I hate that movie more than the others together.

Princess Bride is a good choice. Star Wars, Back to the Future, Grease.

Missy, we must be twins separated at birth! I hated Top Gun and Titanic too. I also hated Jerry McGuire.

My mom HATES Sound of Music, it is her least favorite movie ever. Anchorman is loved.

Don't shoot me....I love Disney, but I hate Pirates.
Not a big Wizard of Oz fan and I've never seen the Godfather because I have absolutely no interest in it.
I would agree with Sound of Music, Gone With the Wind...and would add Remember the Titans and Top Gun. I don't know anyone who has seen those who doesn't like those. But there's no such thing as a universally loved movie...just best-loved.

Me!! I used to like Top Gun, but now I can't stand Tom Cruise and am sick of the movie. Remember the Titans is a wonderful movie though.

You hate Pirates????? How could you???? :)
Ah, well to each there own, I guess. :flower3:

My vote would be for Gone with Wind, Sound of Music and Westside Story.

I was also thinking Mary Poppins!

My personal favorite is Princess Bride. And I loved Dead Poets Society.

Caddy Shack is a classic, and I also thought of Ghostbusters, but that could just be because my kids watched it for the first time the other day

I wouldn't go with The Sound of Music cause alot of people don't like musicals (DH included)

I definitely agree with Star Wars, it still holds up as a new generation is becoming obssessed (my kids included)

What about Shawshank Redemption? It is my personal favorite movie and the #1 movie on IMDB.

Edit: I noticed all of the prior movies were much more happy, feel good family type movie. Can a movie be universally loved if it does not fit that category? I think so.

This was my first thought as well. Not my favorite movie (Devil's Backbone and Dark City are much less universally loved, but they're tops in my book.) I do like The Shawshank Redemption a lot and it seems like most people think it's good.

(Also, I loathe Titanic because I can't stand watching selfish me me me Rose).

Sixteen Candles & Pretty in Pink?

GOONIES!!!!!

SHawshank, Top Gun, Back to the Future, National Lampoons Christmas Vacation!!!

I like E.T.

The first one I thought of was The Wizard of Oz though. Does anyone dislike that movie?

I do! I remember watching it as a young girl and being scared to death of the witch and those freakin' flying monkeys.

I hate this movie and don't understand it's magic at all. I think it's creepy and very scarey (even as a grown woman).

Love Shawshank Redemption, lots of people don't know it's a Stephen King story. Definitely one of the best adaptions that's been done of any of his stories.

Princess Bride and When Harry Met Sally are great movies also. Personally I can't stand any of the National Lampoon movies, and I used to like Top Gun but it's hard to get the picture of TC jumping on the couch out of my head now.

None, but the closest I can think of is perhaps Wizard of Oz. You can always find someone who hates anything though. I hate Top Gun, Titanic and It's a Wonderful Life (sure cause all of us save our brother who saves a bunch of other people and keep an old man from killing kids).

My favorite hands down is Blazing Saddles and I haven't met anyone who hates it. And Mel Brookes haters out there?

I agree with the Wizard of Oz and The Sound of Music.

OT but to the poster that put The Wiz/Wizard of Oz, I just happened to be going through my DVDs gathering up my Harry Potter DVDs and came across the Wiz. Then I remembered Michael Jackson was in it and got sad all over again.:sad1:

I'm amazed by some of the movies that people dislike. Wow, some popular classics getting slammed here. But to each their own.

Of course, if I had my way I'd choose Halloween and Fiddler on the Roof. ;) But I'll stick to The Wizard of Oz.
