What makes you want certain pins?

Do you buy favorite characters? Or do you buy pins you believe to be valuable? Maybe pins to signify a certain event?
I've bought a few Disney Store pins that represent favorite characters or songs from movies, things like that. Or sometimes just ones that make me or my dd go, "Awww!" but I can't imagine buying with the frenzy that some seem to have.
What's the most you would/have paid for a pin? What moved you to do it?
Just trying to get some understanding of this pin thing, as I am totally new to the whole idea.

HunnyPots, I collect Mickey's. Pin collecting is expensive so I've limited myself to simply Mickey. And maybe I'm a snob but I tend to only buy pins that are limited editions. I don't know why, but I'm more drawn to the LEs than anything else. I've paid probably about $25 for my most expensive pin. LE 100 Mickey playing football pin from Disney Auctions.

I guess I mostly collect "themes": grey Eeyore, TOT, resorts we've stayed at, Beauty & the Beast, cool Mickeys, neat Tinkerbells, patriotic pins, Minnie smooching Mickey, and a few others. I rarely buy just a "single" pin, unless it really, really appeals to me. This is the way I keep my spending in check.

I collect mostly holiday ones, special events or anything I'm just particularly drawn to for whatever reason. I like LE's or CM pins but I don't necessarily limit myself to those. I particularly like pins that are for holidays and/or events that I was at WDW for (oh, yeah, I pretty much just collect WDW pins). For instance, I had to have a MVMCP pin from the night we went last month and really wanted some of the other holiday pins (Spectacle of Lights, Epcot Holidays Around the World, etc.) although I didn't get any of them.
