what made you decide to upgrade your camera body?

what happened? new release, wanted a particular feature, found a bunch of money and nothing else to spend it on? and did you go to the next step ( ie rebel to 30 d) or skip a few ( ie rebel to Mark II)

DH and I wanted to make the jump to DSLR...we were looking at the D70 then *happened* upon the D200...the rest is history! LOL

We were also considering Canon but DH had access to more Nikon glass...

Went to Disney in April, came home with over 1000 shots on my Kodak DX4900, which BTW is a great camera, and decided to upgrade to my D50 to take my photography to the next lvl. Now I want more and more. Next body will be the D200 replacement, whenever it comes out. I am not sure when I am going back to Disney, but I can't wait to take this camera.

I've always wanted to take good pictures, and was mostly happy with the Sony F707 and the W50 for just general photo taking until we took Abby to meet Joe from Blues Clues, the photo of her and Joe didn't come out as well as I'd hoped (had good pics in same lighting situations), it pretty much put the nail in the coffin so to speak Now I want to jump from the 400d to the 1DsMII, but I may have to settle for the 5d (if they put out a version with better fps).

D60 --> 10D because the D60 was stolen and I wanted to replace it with something similar.

10D --> 1Dm2 for a number of reasons.

1) The biggest reason was that I wanted faster autofocus with more focus points.
2) I wanted a much larger shot buffer and faster write speeds. I'd tried taking shots of kids doing performances and quickly filled my buffer while they were still performing.
3) I wanted quicker handling. The 1Dm2 was much better, but it could be a lot better still. I want more info the viewfinder so that I don't have to look at the LCD when changing settings. I want auto-ISO. I want to be able to set constraints on program mode.
4) I do a lot of outdoors shooting in harsh conditions, so I wanted a more rugged camera with weather seals.
5) Having true spot metering.
6) I also wanted it so that I would have two bodies for situations where I wanted the cameras configured differently and didn't want to switch lenses.

A few nice to haves that weren't a big deal to me were moving from 3fps to 8+fps, getting a better viewfinder, getting higher resolution (8 vs 6), and having a camera with my name on it (1D Mark II).

It is easy to do that huh? I spent 3 hours the other night reading a digital photography book - referencing my user manual for my new Rebel XTI ( a month old). I understood ISO, aperature, shutter speed, but not how to get it to all work together and I kept wondering "what is that metery thing?'

Well why doing all that studying and referencing and playing with the camera the light bulb went off and I got it! Well, at least I THINK I do.

And then this strange urge came over me - it went something like this - well now I understand this - I wonder if I could figure out or handle something more advanced?

When I mentioned that to DH he looked something like this -

So I totally understand where you are coming from. My head is telling me to really get a good working grasp of what I am doing before I even think about upgrading to something bigger - better - more powerful. Then there is that ambitious side of me - that needs to be kept in check - at least for now.

I had been using an SLR for years. Then went digital in '02 with a Canon S30 PnS camera. I loved using digital and really didn't use the slr much. Then we went to Disney in Nov '05. I brought both camera's with me. I used the PnS much more, but still went though 3 rolls on the slr. I also ran into a gentleman at MGM who was standing next to us during the parade and he had a Canon dSLR. I had always had my eye on Nikon's versions, but there were on the expensive side (D70/D70s was $900+ just for the body). Then I found the Nikon D50. Not as many features, but also $300 less, but had more than enough features for me. I had a bunch of savings bonds around that my grandmother had give to me when I was a kid. So I took those, cashed them out, bought the D50 and couldn't be happer (thank you Nana ).

Problem now is all the lenses I want, I have 4 now, including my newest that arrived today, a used copy of the Tamron 90mm f/2.8 macro (VERY NICE!!!).

I have though about upgrading, but I'd rather have lenses. 6.1MP is the perfect size. I have an 11x14 picture that is cropped to about 75% of the original size and the sharpness is still absolutly stunning. I also like the quality on my digital 8x12 enlargments BETTER than my film enlargments of the same size. So I'm not getting cought up in the MP war. Give me lenses!!!!!

I had an old pentax K1000 and a few of my dad's SLR's that are even older... when the kids were small I went to p&s's just because they were easy and small. I then went to a digital p&s, but was never really happy with the pictures and was frustrated as all get out with the sutter lag..... When the dSLR's finally dropped into reality pricing for me I took the plung. I have been very happy, but do often drool over the 30D and the full frame capablity of the 5D. My next upgrade will be down the road a bit, so while I look and drool sometimes, there is no real need at this time.

i have been thinking along those same lines but started wondering ( not super seriously, more in passing) when i saw the moon shots ( ie your's and furgus's in particular since they were so sharp and i think you both have Nikons) how much is the lens & how much is the camera body...i mean with the moon there isn't a whole lot of compositon involved ( well unless you do that pano that gdad posted) and i know my promaster is not good so not a real fair comparison to anything that costs more than $1 but i started wondering how much the quality of the photo is the influence of the body...i dont' have a problem with my rebel and I know it is fine for me now and i really need to stop thinking about that subject ... maybe if i get the lens i want for larger zoon i'll be happier since i felt happier with the lower zoom end when i got my other "better than junk" lens.
