I have written and reading dyslexic. It's very difficult for to write something with it having my undivided attention. It's me a while to read books to.

What got on my teachers nerevous in college was I never took notes in class and did not even have my book open in class. They swear up and down that i cheat off somebody test in class because I actually understand the materal better then the people that take notes in class.

I did have some read the test orally to me and write down the answers that i said.

My DS(12) has written dyslexia as well as dysgraphia. It at times can be very hard for him. He is doing much better.

My son has dysgraphia. Really tough for him in Junior High

My DD has both but isn't really reading & writing very well yet, she's in 2nd grade. She does much better with oral information and does fine if questions are read to her and can tell you what she wants to say. I've started having her write more on her own even though it is not very well done I know she needs the practice.

I'm not dylexic but did finally figure out in college that I did better when I didn't try to take notes. If I took notes I'd forget to listen, if I just sat and listened I retained the information much better. I've also started using books on tape more and have learned that I do better listening than reading, I have a tendency to skim books and sometimes skip details.

If you know of anyone who needs resources or help with dyslexia or speech communication, you may wish to look into your nearest Scottish Rite Learning Center.

Scottish Rite masons work very hard to help the dyslexic similar to the way Shriners work with crippled children.

The Scottish Rite here provides free testing, we haven't used it but I have friends that have.

The public school my DD attends uses the language program designed by Scottish Rite for Dyslexia.

Really a great organization :) I have a nephew who goes to their orthopedic center. He has a prosthetic leg and they provide all care free of charge, they are the most advanced in new technologies.

Both reading and writing... pretty much equally too. I've learned personal tricks over the years that seem to help me to plow through it though, although numbers still cause me a lot of trouble.

Both reading and writting. I also have GREAT trouble doing things in reverse.

I do have a word processing disability that can be very frustrating! An example of that frustration was last weekend at a dog show. I show my dog in obedience matches where a
judge will call out patterns that I must follow ( heel, halt, left, right
etc.) . This takes lots of concentration for me. When the judge called out "left" I could not remember what that word meant. At that moment, that word had absolutely no meaning for me!
Luckily,it did for my dog!! She knew what "left"meant and guided me in the correct direction. Its weird because I know what these words mean, but at times my brain just can not recall their meaning. When I was a kid,I sometimes felt so dumb. Now,I'm 49 years old,and still dealing with this frustrating problem. But atleast now,I know it has nothing to do with intelligence.

Many of the programs across the country are modeled after the one in Texas. It is outstanding from what I understand!

In my area, we provide free screenings and free video courses to all the public schools throughout the state.

Thanks. I was wondering if i was the only with dysxic on these boards.

dysgraphia

What exactly is that? Both of my children are dyslexic. My son was exited out of the Language Science program here after being in it for six years and my daughter is currently in her fourth year, but I have never heard that word used before.

They both have reading comprehension problems and minor letter/number problems. Usually the letters/numbers that switch around are in the middle of words/numbers. Their brains also work much faster than they can talk at times and they can't write in complete sentences most of the time. They always leave a word or two out and have to go back and check their work.

Getting them to slow down has been a challenge but they are constantly working on it. My son failed an Algebra test last week because he hurried through it. Fortunately he knows why. He made a 100 on his report card last nine weeks in that class so failing a test there is unusual.

Where their dyslexia came from, we don't know. We think that maybe my husband is and maybe my sister.

I have reading dyslexia with a processing/retreiving problem. My daughter is dyslexic with reading and writing.
I would like to know more about the Scottish Rite program. I have never heard of them being involved in any programs for LD kids.

Both DSs and DH have dyslexia. One DS also has auditory processing delay. With much interventin both boys are reading on grade lever (2nd & 3rd), however, writing is a hugh challange for them.

Thanks for the disgraphia link.

I am so thankful that we have a school district that has a program for dyslexic children. Not all school districts do. And the teacher that taught my son in Language Science for four years was awesome! I wish that my daughter had had her for more than one year but she retired.
