to anyone with experience in any or all of these places.....what type of car should we rent? right now I have the option of small suv (jeep type) or Full size car. we will drive from Sedona area- to the Grand Canyon- Hoover Dam-thru Death valley (seeing the sites) to Yosemite down thru LA and Disney area-
I'm concerned about the harsher roads we might encounter- should I be? even a small SUV might no be up to some of the more unpaved roads in DV,etc....what should we do? any advice appreciated! price difference is about 200.00,which I'd love to save , but do we need that SUV?

I have a lovely map here, what section of Hollywood is the famous theater in? and the handprints? I think we'll be going by anyway,so thought it would be fun to stop, maybe see the big letters sign too.....

All you want to know about Hollywood is in the sticky in the Southern California section, here.

The El Capitan Theater, Kodak Theater, and Walk of Fame are all near the intersection of Hollywood and Highland.

Now most small suvs are nothing but tall cars. Not more rugged.

I'm not sure what you have in mind when you say dirt road but I don't think you will be climing over boulders.

I would go with what's cheaper and keep gas costs in mind. And if you will be comfortable and have room for your luggage.

If you want to go off road in Sedona, take a guided tour in a the tour company's jeep. Then you won't risk any damage to a rental vehicle, won't get lost, or drive off a cliff.

thanks for the replies- I'll look at the sticky:thumbsup2
I had heard about popped tires, and rugged roads, in some of these places- so had a concern about that- I don't think we'll have time for the extra jeep tour, and we were going to drive to sightsee-
either car is 5 person,so that isn't an issue- I guess I was wondering if there's a benefit for being 'taller' ;)

You'll be on paved major highways and routes. You don't need to worry about rough roads.

The "main" unpaved roads in Death Valley to the main stops are not bad (as unpaved roads go). A normal car will just fine. The really off-road kind of stuff is a whole other story. I wouldn't try them on my own even with an SUV . . . there is no guarentee that a rental SUV will have 4 whell drive - as a pp said, it's just tall. Also mileage in an SUV will be pretty poor in comparison to a regular car and you are doing a lot of driving.

thanks! side note, any chance of getting to the racetrack in DV in a regular car? or too crazy in a rental? I'd hate to be the dummy dying of thirst out there...:rotfl:

After reading the information about the road to Racetrack, DW gave me an emphatic NO!
