What kind of camera do you use?

Was wondering what type of camera you use for your photos? I have a Kodak EasyShare Z740, which I like, but after two years and 5000+ photos, it's starting to have problems. This being my second Kodak that's done that, I think I need to change brands to something that will last longer.

Love to know what others use - and if you've gone from a point and shoot to a Dslr, how the change was for you.

Thanks for any advice!

Nikkon coolpix - can't remember which one, 4 or 5. I bought it in 2004 ready for a Disney trip, but the battery is starting to run down so I need to change it. Any suggestions for a nice small camera with a quick shutter?

I have a Nikon D70 and a D70s. Looks like a 35mm camera. DH takes 5000+ pics on every WDW trip so we like the size.
We started off with a Canon SD500, which was our very first digital. It was great for outdoor day time shots but inside, lowlight shots were not that great. DH found it to be pretty limiting for his taste. I liked the ease of the point and shoot. I want another point and shoot for every day stuff, so I might go with a canon again.

We have had three Sony higher-end cameras (not SLR) in the past 8 years -upgraded from disc to cd to memory stick. However, we just bought a Nikon D40 SLR and we love it. After we bought the Nikon, we heard about the new Sony Alpha that we could use all of dh's old Maxima lens with. Still kicking ourselves about that, but the Nikon is really great. We may go to the Sony Alpha one day.

Personally, I'd go with a higher end point-and-shoot if you aren't interested in taking creative shots. Do you see yourself using different lenses, manual focus, etc? The trade off is that you have more stuff to carry and the camera is bigger in general. I take many more every day photos with my small Casio point-and-shoot that stays in my purse. I like the SLR for special events, potraits, etc. But I like the convenience my small camera brings because I'd miss some pictures if I didn't have it.

HTH! Good luck!

I just went from the 740 (Had problems with focusing after about 3000 pictures) to a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ8K and while I'm still learning it, I really like it a lot more than my Kodak

Olympus stylus 710. I LOVE the size and the pic quality is great, however the shutter speed is horrible (I think it is an Olympus issues in general). I hope to get a new one this summer, and sadly it will not be an Olympus because of that issue:sad1:

Thanks for your input on this. As much as I'd like to say that yes, I'd love using different lenses, manual focus, and all, at this point in time, no way. Day to day life is so bonkers, I think I'm still living a point and shoot lifestyle.

I've heard that Olympus was equal to Kodak in shutter speed - slowish. I've not researched much with Sony or Panasonic, and there are some Nikons and Casios that I've heard good things about.

Thanks so much for taking the time to read the thread and post - really appreciate it!

If I were buying a point-and-shoot today, I'd probably buy the Sony below. I love the Carl Zeiss lenses on the Sonys. I've had good luck with Sonys in low light. They have an ISO setting that rocks in low light. The image stabilization thingamajig works great, too.

Cameras are like cars... some like Fords and some like Chevys. Some like foreign and some like domestic. Reasearch and find the one that will work for you. Most nice camera shops will let you play with the cameras on site to get a feel for it. Sometimes, just holding one in your hands will eliminate it as an option because it doesn't "feel" comfortable in your hands.

Good luck and have fun!

I have a panasonic, and while faster than my friend's Kodak it is still slower than my MIL or Father's Canons. I am looking at getting an SLR down the road though, so am OK with that aspect of a point & shoot for now.

Might I also suggest heading over to the Photography boards and checking out their Sticky thread on cameras? They have a lot of info. Plus, you can post what features you are looking for (like a sport/continuous mode that will take 3 pics every time you press the shutter) and they should be able to help.

The Lumix I settled on was far faster than any of the canon's I played with (all used the same memory card)

I've found using a faster card can help speed things up

I have a nikon D50. I really love the pictures this camera takes. I was worried about taking it to DL due ti it's size by ended up not having a problem.

I have a Canon rebel XT- love it!!! Got it last year!! Then, I just got my "water Camera" Olympus 790SW. Haven't really used it yet (only had about 2 weeks). Just really got it because it's small amd can take in rain, snow, underwater.

Just wanted to thank everyone for their responses - I'm hoping to head out this afternoon and play at my local stores, and see what happens from there!

Our 1st digital was Kodak Z730 and we liked it alot. I wanted a camera with a better zoom so we got the digital rebel xt and LOVE it! The glory of it is that you can get amazing pics just using the automatic setting.

We use a Kodak DX6490, it's 3-4 years old and no problems. We just got a Sony Alpha DSLR, but I haven't learned to use it yet. I will before our next WDW trip, and I'll take the Kodak too.

I have the Nikon D50 which I love but that booger gets heavy around the neck after awhile. Especially running after a toddler and a 5 year old. I also have the Canon Power Shot SD800is Digital Elph. I didn't like this camera at first because compared to the Nikon you have that delay. But after a year I love it. It does so much that I haven't even tapped into everything. While looking for a little camera (i told my husband I needed another camera so I didn't have to lug the big one around all the time) I really wanted one with little delay anyway after I found my Canon I was still looking at cameras and I told the sales guy about how hard it was taking pictures of kids with the delay and he had a great idea. Get one of those cameras that the screen moves. When you go to take a picture have the screen facing the kids and they can look at themselves and it will give you the time to take the picture cause they'll be son intrigued looking at themselves. I hope that made sense sure was alot of rambling:lmao: .

Just wanted to thank everyone for their replies - I ended up purchasing the Canon Powershot S5. Looking forward to playing with it!
