What kid asks where they can get escargot?

I was listening to the 8/19 podcast on my way to work this morning, and this question cracked me up in light of the conversation my daughter (7) and I had yesterday. She said something like, "There are animals no one eats, right? Like snails?" I surprised her with the news that snails were not only eaten, they were considered delicacies in some countries. Her eyes got really big, and she immediately asked when she could try escargot.

So...those kids are out there. I don't know how I ended up with one - I have exactly zero interest in escargot (though I will admit that I have probably tried more unusual meats than the average gal).

Has anyone else managed to raise adventurous eaters?

Yep, my 3 year old wanted Lobster for her birthday. I love escargot and actually will not share it when I get it.

We have two daughters, and they couldn't be more different when it comes to food adventures. One could subsist entirely on mac and cheese, cheese sticks, yogurt squeezers, and fruit (thank goodness). Anything else is likely to get pushed around the plate and ultimately rejected. The other will try anything once and has discovered a love of many kinds of fish, among other things - she's 5! I think there's hope for the younger one, who actually ate the chicken I prepared last night and went bananas for the naan pizza at Sanaa this spring. We just keep offering variety and hope for the best. :)

I swear that I am a kid when it comes to eating different foods. Jay raves about the escargot snacks at F&W. I shudder at the thoght of eating snails. No offense, sau418. Although, the sauce that they put them in is delicious.

I took my 6 yr old granddaughter shopping and let her pick the menu - ahi tuna, broccoli, baguette with Brie. She loves squid and am sure she'd readily try snails. The other couldn't be farther from her cousin - chicken fingers, burgers, pasta with butter and bagels with peanut butter

My 3-year old is finicky but eats lots of different types of foods. It's like she is on the Raw Food diet. She eats raw broccoli, eats peppers and tomatoes whole (like apples), eats the curly kale garnish on our plates at restaurants...She eats hard-boiled eggs, steak, edamame, chicken, pickles, oatmeal, goat cheese, mini wheats, and any type of fruit. She enjoys kid food of course, like cheese, yogurt, cookies, and her favorite: jelly sandwiches. She just doesn't like many foods that you mix together - nothing with sauce or in a stew. Of course on what day she will be willing to eat which items is always a mystery!

I actually think Disney does okay with their kids menus at table service. The counter service could offer more variety, though.

DS eats food from all of the food groups, however not while enjoying a lot of variety! It's funny because he loves marmelade and other things that most kids do not like. We eat very healthy foods, all kinds of variety; This year he grew vegetables in container pots so he's pretty proud of that. When we are away, we have a rule that he tries something completely new each day.

I keep telling DH that he will be eating us out of house and home when he reaches his late teens, so not to worry. We have a nephew who is athletic and he eats like a horse. Upon arrival home after school he eats enough for a full meal and then eats again at dinner time, never mind the bowl of cereal before bed! Yikes!

I think this is one of those foods that most people would like if they didn't know what it was. I wouldn't go out of my way to try it but if I were somewhere that served it I would probably have one. I felt the same about caviar and got some of that at Palo during PCC 1.0.

Along those lines I was watching an episode of Good Eats on Lobster and Alton Brown said that the meat of a cockroach is identical in every way to that of a lobster so no one would know the difference between the two if you didn't tell them assuming it was served in a way that it wasn't obvious.

Escargot is an excuse to get garlic butter sauce. ;)

That being said, I do like them because of that garlic butter, and the way they're served at F&W, they are hidden inside a little bread cup. I call them Snail Poppers. And they are good.

All my kids love "calamari" and my middle child will eat a bowl full of mussles anytime we go to Carabbas. They will all eat sushi (tuna and salmon) also if offered.

Escargot is ok, but I don't go out of my way to eat it. (They're not like squid -- more like overcooked shrimp.) My dad loves them.

DD is a pretty good eater. Some of her favorite foods seem a bit odd to her parents -- born and raised on the prairies. DD loves seaweed in her soup. She's not crazy about red meat, but devours virtually any kind of fish. And she likes fruit only if she can hold it and bite it herself -- if you cut it up, she'll leave it on her plate. (Thankfully, she's mastered the art of spitting out cherry pits.) After fussing over pork chops and noodles last night, she decided to eat a half-dozen black olives. Her cousins think she's a freak. ;-)

This is also coming from the girl who tried lobster and said, "Okay. I tried lobster. Huh." :rotfl: Granted, Blue Bayou cooked it a little too much. I've had better, but lobster is lobster!

BTW, she had the similar reaction to clams at Ariel's Grotto.

EWWWW, Lori!

Indeed you are correct Lori. :thumbsup2

Never heard anybody order "escargot, hold the garlic butter please".

When our kids were maybe 2-3 they would eat Sushi rolls. They still kinda will but they take then apart to get the pieces they like. :scared1::lmao:

They are both SUPER pickey eaters.

A few years ago the NC Science museum had a bug event which was very popular. They had a tent with a buffet. That served bugs. Yes, a Bug Buffet! :thumbsup2:lmao:

The DW and kids were not interested so I went and loaded up on bugs for lunch!

You really could not taste the ants, millworms, etc. They just kinda crunched. :rotfl2: Even in the Jello. :lmao:

The problem was The Cookies. :rotfl:

The Cookies had ant sprinkles. The kids wanted The Cookies. They asked if The Cookies had bugs. I said yes and pointed out the black ant crunchies on top. The REFUSED to believe me that there were ants on The Cookies. I kept telling them there were ants but THEY WANTED THE COOKIES!

So they ate The Cookies. :rotfl2:

They wanted those cookies so bad they "refused" to believe that there were bugs on the cookies. They ate 'em. They like 'em. They refused to believe there were crunchy ants. They just thought the ants were crunchy sprinkles. :rotfl2::lmao:

So the kids are picky but put a cookie in front of them even covered with ants and they will chow down.

Dan

My son just tried escargot on our cruise 2 weeks ago and thought they were "ok.". He LOVES sushi especially tuna and gets mad that we limit it to once a month due to heavy metals! He also lives scallops, salmon, lobster, crab legs...do you see why we don't do the dining plan LOL!

So I clicked on my food report to grab a pic I took last October of the "Snail Poppers". ;)

Nikki, you don't even have to reply. I know. "Ewwwwww!" ;)

Once there was a snail who was tired of being slow. He went out and bought a really fast sports car and had the dealer paint a big 'S' on each side of it.

Whenever someone saw him zooming past in his new car, they would say, "Hey, look at that S-car go!"
