What is your hometown famous for ?

New Rome? I got a ticket for a dusty tail light. No Joke. A dusty tail light. And of course they know you're not going to go all the way back to contest it.

If people are genuinely speeding, I have no problem with any town cracking down on it with heavy ticketing. But there are some places that are wayyyy over the line.

We have a winner! Try Googling it and you can get the complete picture of just how bad it was. We moved away before things got really horrible, but kept in touch with friends who were still there. The police would ask where you worked when you got a ticket, and then come and harass you at work, among other things. They got away with things because the community was small, which exempted them from a lot of checks and balances. Those of us that lived there would usually go out of our way to take back streets that were under other jurisdictions, but people passing through or who had legitimate business in town often didn’t have a choice. It’s one really deep rabbit hole, but you might not feel so bad about the dusty taillight when you’re finished.

It looked to me like about the only thing the town had to fund was the police department. And that looked like it was more than self funding. I sure wasn't going back. But after reading after googling, I got off light. HAHA.

Margret Chase Smith, one of the oldest continuous state fairs in the United States (every year since 1818), Benedict Arnold, and lots of mills.

Benedict Arnold's friend John Andre was hanged for treason in our town and George Washington slept here. Many movies were filmed like Step Mom and Purple Rose of Cairo.

Orange is the New Black was filmed one town over.

And Camp Shanks:
Camp Shanks served as a point of embarkation for troops departing overseas during World War II. Dubbed “Last Stop USA”, the camp housed about 50,000 troops spread over 2,040 acres (8.3 km2) and was the largest World War II Army embarkation camp, processing 1.3 million service personnel including 75% of those participating in the D-Day invasion. In 1945 Camp Shanks housed German and Italian prisoners of war.[1]

After the war, Camp Shanks was converted into housing for veterans with families attending colleges and universities in the New York City area under the GI Bill; the settlement, then known as Shanks Village, closed in 1954.[1]

A small museum opened near the site in June 1994.[2]
