Hi Everyone,

I have a Canon Rebel 1ti with the kit lens 18-55 and a 50mm/1.8f

I'm looking to buy a new lense preferably something that offers a bit more zoom capability than what I have now.. I'm looking at possibly a Canon 18-135mm or Sigma 18-200mm...

I am wondering what everyone uses as there walkaround lens at the parks? Thanks!

Sigma 28-70 f2.8. I found the 2.8 to be more valuable than more zoom. I had in my bag the 70-200 f2.8 for the few times I needed more zoom.

Sigma 18 - 50 f2.8 about 90% of the time. Sometimes I like to play around with an old 50 f1.8 that is manual everything...lol

Sony (Tamron) 18-250mm has been my walkaround and travel go-to lens for over 3 years, and it's downright perfect in every measure as an all-purpose walkaround.

Even as a bit of a lens collector (I've piled up more than 20 lenses between 2 camera bodies) it's still something I'll always have in my bag especially when traveling.

Nikkor 18-200vr is my fav. Sure it is not perfect and you don't get razor sharp pictures of Mickey, but to me that is not that important. It has VR, Nikon's version of IS by canon. I would say in this day and age, image stabilization is a must have on your go to lens. That way with good technique you can be indoors at Disney, take a picture at shutter speeds around 1/15-1/30th handheld and get good results without needing the flash. Makes the pictures have so much more personality, rather than using the flash and getting that same old digital camera look to all your indoor photos.

Wow thanks everyone! Lots of good insights into different lenses. so many choices though! It's a difficult one for me. I want to make sure I choose one I will enjoy and will give me nice pictures. I just don't want to invest in a 70-300 or 55-200 and then have to switch between lenses and miss shots and for me with 3 kids in tow, too much of a hassle!...

I will definitely bring along my 50mm/f1.8 for portrait pics of my kids with characters.

That's precisely why many of us went with the 18-250/18-270 type lenses...they cover from wide to tele in one compact, light package, and are capable throughout the range. A dedicated wide lens might be a touch better, and a dedicated telephoto a touch better at either end, and in the middle ranges these lenses are generally as good as any...but the fact that you CAN go from wide to middle to tele in just a second or two without a lens change is what makes these lenses so nice.

You can shoot anything with these lenses, and get very nice results. I've used mine for wildlife, sports, night, scenic, landscape, portrait, indoor, outdoor, macro, closeup...you name it. For an idea of the capabilities of such a lens, feel free to browse my 18-250 gallery (mine's a 'Sony' badged lens, but is well known to actually be the same optically as the Tamron 18-250, as Tamron manufacturers these for Sony):

I love my Sigma 18-250 f3.5-4.6 that I have on my nikon.. I used a 50mm f1.8 Prime for the fireworks. I used the sigma almost 100% of the time.. great lens for the price.. I do wish it was faster.. but.. it was what I can afford.. :)

Another vote for the Sigma 18-250. With the kids running around, I never know what length I'll need for my next shot. It rarely leaves my camera.

the 18-55IS is pretty good for a "walkaround" lens. And don't be afraid of changing lens, you can get better pics!
And one more thing, the Canon 55-250IS is on sale at Target for only $150

That Canon 18-135 is my main lens. The only time I feel like I want more reach is for close-ups for some of the animals at AK. and even then, you're not totally out of reach to get a good shot.

I would acknowledge the Nikon 18-200vr as a great carry around lens. I do use it as a carry around lens. Also being so old and one who remembers cameras before zooms, I have in the past few years been carrying prime lens on a daily basis to force myself to use the best zoom we all have...our feet. Some of the primes I carry are a 35 1.8, 50 1.2, and I also love the 10.5 2.8.

I also have a new 24-70 2.8 I am anxious to give a workout with.

Is that the Lens you used for your pictures? (I followed your signature links)

I'm leaning more towards this lens as it's a bit more afordable...

I used that lens for most of my pictures (a Sigma 30mm for the rest).

On our last cruise I used th Pentax DA 12-24mm as my main lens, I was happy with it. I have been using it pretty much solely at our local theme park ( I call it Practice) with great results....
