Before reading on I want to make one thing clear: If you are going to be racist to others and make hurtful comments I suggest you keep your mouth closed. This thread is about learning about and appreciating other cultures.

I am Polish! I don't speak it often, but I understand it. My parents came to Canada, from Poland (with my sister, she was 8) in the 80's. My name in Polish is Emilka, and I'm a beach bum- hence, the one and only, the lovely, milkabum! :teeth: I also have a bit of Polynesian culture tied into my family! I also speak French because of Canada's second language. Tu parle francais?

I think it's sad that VMK only pays attention to America. Esspecially with that iPod nano contest! I find it hurtful when people critisize others about the USA hats and be racist to others because of the colour of their skin. It doesn't matter if you're blue or pink we're all people!

well i'm:
1/2 jewish (on my dad's side)
1/2 christen (mom's side)
hungarian
irish
i wanna say polish, but i'll have to get back to you..............

sometimes i feel like a retard because i don't go to church or cinagog (sp.?)
sometimes i feel guilty because i celebrate christmas and hanukah

i was thinking about making this thread before, but you beat me to it! lol!

(assuming we are not mentioning skin colors for fear of racism)

Well, do you mean the culture I have actually grown up in?
I'm 100% American. I was one of 2 children in a middle class family growing up in the late 60s and 70s.
My mother worked so both my sister and I were latchkey kids.
My sister played softball for many years, and was very good at it.
I sucked at sports so I read tons of books: both children, teen and adults books.
Disco was big when I was a teenager but I never went to the school dances or clubs.
We had a few dogs for pets.
We watched too much TV, hang out in the mall, and went to movies.
We celebrated Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and birthdays.
School and homework seemed to be the major thing we did with our life back them.
Both my parents complained without end about taxes, the bills, not turning out the lights, not filling up the ice cube trays, the neighbors, the government, the dogs, each other, etc.
We had few “vacations” because we didn’t have the money, but sometimes as a child we went camping for the weekend.

Or do you mean my genetic background, which I never had any connection to because all my living family have lived here in America for about 150 years. . Well according to my mother one of my great-great-great grandfather (3 greats - she never gave his name) was 100% redheaded Irishman and he came to America and married the daughter of a Cherokee chief, plus I’m suppose to English and Scottish as well. But none of my parents or grandparents or the couple of great grandparents that I remember ever said anything about culture or did any teaching about it. I have done no research on it. I think of myself as American and nothing else.

I totally respect those people who have kept their ancestor’s culture alive and celebrate it regularly. I have been to many such public celebrations for many different cultures and a few private ones as well when invited by a friend.

I love to try new foods: Chinese, Japanese, East Indian, Russian, Jewish, Germany, English, French, Middle Eastern, Italian, Norwegian, Spanish, Caribbean, Swedish, Greek, Scottish - I’ve actually eaten haggis –yuck ( I spit it out 2 seconds later – but I did put it in my mouth- never again by the way), and other things I can’t think about now. Last week we had Brazilian food for the first time.

I enjoy reading about the histories of different countries and peoples.

my dad's side came from france and i dont know about my mom's
