Armed citizens (some of them employees) staked out a couple businesses in Ferguson during the unrest there. The looters never got within 200 yards.

Most, if not all of those "armed citizens" we're members of groups that do not recognize the authority of the federal government.

No matter what this all started out about, any message has now been lost in the chaos that these thugs have created. This is no longer a protest, it is a riot and, as such, different actions by the police (and soon to be the military) will need to be taken. The safety of the officers, firefighters, soldiers, and innocent civilians has to come first. If these punks are threatening lives (and they have), then it will be dealt with.

May Saint Michael watch over the officers who are out on those streets as well as their families. I know what it is like to have a family member as an officer and those seemingly endless nights of my dad being out and never knowing if he would be okay.

Actually, when a state of emergency is called, the state police take over command of the incident, not the mayor. The decisions will actually be made by the governor at this point.

BTW, your statement is a GROSS exaggeration. Most of the armed citizens protecting property in Ferguson weren't affiliated with any organized groups at all. And the small handful who were do in fact recognize the US Gov't.

And I standby letting a civilian make decisions is ridiculous. The head of the SP should be making deployment decisions not someone worried about reelection

The DIS is mirroring the sentiment the general public seems to be expressing; that destruction of retail space is, essentially, more devastating than the loss of black lives.

That said, it's horrifying to watch this unfold and I can only wish for the safety of everyone in Baltimore during this time. But I'm lacking the ignorance and naivete needed to jump on the righteous indignation bandwagon here.

Unfortunately, his death has been overcome by worries for people who have lost their businesses, jobs, senior housing, churches, etc.... This is how it works. We would all love to be talking about how people peacefully showed respect for his life and searched for real answers to decades long issues.

People commit crimes within their own communities. I'm sure at least 90% of people murdered in Italy are killed by other Italians. It's about statistical likelihood, not racial motivation.

Okay, here's one - people in those neighborhoods are statistically far more likely to be shot & killed by someone else from the neighborhood who is not legally permitted to own a gun, than they are to be shot & killed by the police who patrol the neighborhood while visibly armed.
