I was reading in an English newspaper that a travel writer went to Winter Park, Downtown Orlando and he said that it was fantastic - it is not touristy yet is 'proper' orlando and there are loads of things to do.

Is it worth spending the day there?

Is it safe?

Thanks

thank you jannyans - i am just going to the site now!

We visited Park Avenue, Winter Park for an afternoon last year and it was a lovely break away from the hussle and bussle of the area.

Shame the park has an Amtrack station in the middle of it!

Lots of small shops, cafes, galleries etc. The largest shops are GAP and Williams-Sonoma (hope I got that right). My wife bought herself a stained glass thing(!) at a gallery opposite the fire station.

If you want bigger shops, there is the Winter Park Mall about three blocks to the west!

Winter Park...northeast side of Orlando is a beautiful area, definately worth the trip. The downtown area is wonderful...little shops, courtyards. Very relaxing.

Enjoy!

Winter Park is the upmarket area of Orlando. You can spend a very pleasant half day walking around the shops and the neighbourhood. Whilst there, take a boat trip and see Orlando at it's best...

You must do the boat trip - it is wonderful. I read the same article and had to laugh at the comment about the older gentlemen driving the boat - you won't believe how old they are when they tell you!
It is very safe and a great contrast to the theme parks.

There are also some lovely restauarants on Park Ave. in Winter Park. Pannullo is one that I can think of off the top of my head that is usually very good, but any of the little cafes and bistros on Park Avenue should be equally good.

If you visit Winter Park on a Saturday, be sure to visit the Farmer's Market for fresh produce, baked goods, plants and other goods.
