The middle school that my dd goes to received a death threat the other day for today. The high school got one too. Although the school doubts that there will be any problems, they have both schools locked up for the day and aren't allowing any bags or backpacks in school. There is also a heavy police presence. They also left it up to the parents whether or not they send their children to school. After some discussion, my dd said, "Nothing is going to happen so I would rather just go to school." We agreed with her take on the situation and I drove her to school this morning. Very eerie because there were police around and newspaper reporters and no students outside. I am confident that this is a hoax but I made sure I told her I loved her as she left the car. I guess part of me will worry all day until she gets home this afternoon.

I think the kids look at it as a given day off school. Unfortunately in this day & age they just don't realize that it isn't something we should or can take lightly.

What a shame.

Times have changed. I remember when I was in elementary school the principal asked me to crawl under the portable classrooms one day to see if I saw anything that didn't belong.

The school had received a bomb threat and I was one of those dependable small kids; I guess that shows they didn't take the threat very seriously if they sent a student under the buildings to "check it out"

I don't think that would happen today...

And some kid (probably) is having a great big laugh about the whole thing right now too.

One thing I find about this age though, is that kids who do this can't keep their pleasure with themselves bottled up. They have to tell someone, and since 9/11 kids are more likely to turn this person in.

Hopefully that will happen in this case.

I think even kids are getting really sick of this nonsense.

I don't know what town you are in (I am in SE MA) but just recently there was an incident in Hopkinton where a student had a "hit list" that included students and I think one teacher. There was graffitti on the bathroom wall about it too. The girl was caught and may have to do jail time. If that does happen maybe it will stop the copy-cats and let them know it's not just a day off from school but a serious crime.

Hope all went well for your DD.

Jill

we had some last year (Wakefield). It is very scarey!! I didn't leave my house that entire day!!

wishing you the best. I am sure I will see it on the local news tonight.

Atleast they seem to be taking it seriously even if they think its bogus. My oldest ds school had a bomb threat last year and they didnt take it seriously to me. The school was kept open, no extra police, no nothing. Not very reassuring to a parent.

It really stinks that our kids have to think about and deal with issues such as this, at such young ages.

I hope your daughter returns home safely today. Please let us know!

I think it's horrible that a school would have to be closed down for a day due to bomb threats. But it would be so much more horrible if a bomb was detonated and lives were lost. I commend the school for taking it seriously. After 9/11 there were daily bomb threats at our school. The school would empty out, be inspected and then everyone would go back in. We were usually given the option of sending them or keeping them home. I usually sent them but worried all day long. They were always just fine.

This has stopped over the last year or so.....thank goodness....

I'm sure your dd will be just fine too. Hang in there Mom! :)

Well, my dd returned home just fine! She said that there were only about 60 students in her grade out of about 200. The high school only had 300 kids out of 900. My dd is happy she went to school and said she is glad that she didn't let someone scare her away! Thanks for all the reassurances.

I think your daughter showed a lot of courage by going to school today. Give her a hug from all of us!
