Hi,

Can anyone tell me what there is for a 75 year old man to do on sea days?
My father in law just can't picture himself on a boat for 48 hours without being bored? Mainly what can he do from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00p.m.

Any and all suggestions that I can pass on to him are greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Order the Disney planing Cruise DVD and let him watch. The DVD shows so many thing to do. Or have him check on line. This is my first Disney Cruise but i have been on the Carnival cruise. There are movies, shows, walking, swimming, eating, dancing - just enjoying life.

DH and I brought our SkipBo cards and spent some time at the Cove Cafe playing cards and watching the sea go by. Many "seniors" walked past us and commented "We should have brought our SkipBo cards". There is also shuffleboard and ping pong. I know my grandfather loved shuffleboard at that age.

We took my 78 year old father on the 14 day repo cruise. He was afraid he was going to be bored the whole time because he is not a big Disney fan - and "didn't want to be hanging out with Mickey Mouse all day". During the day, they had a number of different activities and lectures going on -- some of them about Disney projects but some of them had nothing to do with Disney like the Navigator series. He also enjoyed playing Bingo a few afternoons. We also brought along our Skip-Bo cards (and regular cards). They also have some organized game play like trivia and pictionary and scattergories where you can play with a group. He also enjoyed hanging out by the adult pool and people watching.

I guess my point is that there are plenty of options. It depends on what the 75 year old likes to do. My dad is proof that even if you go in with a bad attitude, you can still walk away having had a good time. (But then my dad is a people person and just talking to people keeps him entertained.)

Can you tell me the topics of the lectures that were given during the day?
Also what "type" of activities did they offer?

Do they show movies during the day and if they do are they the children movies?

Would you be able to explain what the "Navigator Series" is?

I have ordered the DVD for him,

Thanks soooo much for your help!

I'll try to tell you what I remember. Usually there is someone related to Disney sailing so they have lectures in the Buena Vista Theater (sometimes elsewhere) and they talk about their specialty. So it could be something about Walt Disney World, Disneyland, the Cruise Line or other Disney parks around the world. They give you information about where the company was, where it is going. Disney is known for having great business speakers so even if you aren't into Disney, they are usually very interesting speakers. The last couple of cruises I was on were special cruises so we were very lucky to have Don "Ducky" Williams on board who gave very interesting talks about his position as the Disney Marketing Artist.
I believe they usually have some small lectures about photography or things from the spa as well. (It isn't like the lecture series on the Queen Mary where they have guest speakers in on every cruise from varied arts and science backgrounds. But they are typically very interesting and an option to sitting by the pool.)

They have a whole range of activities going on during the day. Some of them I can remember are: pool games, golf chipping competitions in the atrium, teams building vegetable racers, an ice carving demonstration, trivia contests (themes included general knowledge, sports, music and of course Disney), bingo - usually twice a day, art auctions, sometime the performers would hold workshops (like a magician or ventriloquist), learn to draw Disney characters. I'm sure I'm forgetting a whole host of them.

They do show movies in the Buena Vista theater during the day. I think a lot of them are children's movies but they do get some more adult movies in there. (I don't think they show the R movies until late.) But we've seen quite a few movies on board. (To know what to expect, I look at what movies the Disney companies (Walt Disney Pictures, Buena Vista Pictures, Hollywood Pictures, etc.) have released in the 6 months before I sail.

The Navigator Series is 3 or 4 meetings (you can attend any one or all of them) they have during sea days. They have different topics related to the operation of ship. The speakers are usually the senior officers on the ship. They give you a lot of interesting information about sailing in general, about themselves and about the Disney Magic. I'm not a sailing buff but I always find these very interesting. I believe now, the first is a walking tour of the ship. The others are sit down in Rockin' Bar D. It used to be part of this series that they would give you tickets for Bridge Tours but I believe now you can just go to Guest Services to get those tickets. (Bridge Tours are held on Port Days.)

I should mention here that they also have another Adult Entertainment series called the Art of Entertaining. This also has a series of lectures, presented by the Dining/Kitchen staff. They cover different food/wine topics and you always get a sample. They usually also have a napkin folding one which is hands-on and lots of fun. Usually if you attend this series, you get tickets to do the Kitchen Tour. Which in my opinion isn't overly fascinating but should be done at least once.

Thanks soooooooo much for your very detailed reply. It helps alot and now I feel better that he will have LOTS to do during the day!!!!

After reading Citen's post, I feel like I need to rush back to the Magic and do a lot more! LOL! But it really is amazing all the stuff going on. There are some Navigators(daily ship's newsletters) scanned and available which you could also look at. They list everything that's going on each day on board the ship and you could show those to your FIL. I'm not able to post links yet but maybe someone else will?

Flirt with the young female cast members of course. Isn't that what the "old" guys do?

I am guessing he is a grandfather of some children on the cruise. If so, take it from experience the joy on their faces every day, as they have the experience of a lifetime, will make his day. If he is able he will be enjoying shuffle board and ping pong with them. Find him a shady spot by the Mickey pool while they enjoy the slide. I went with my daughter's family on a Disney Cruise in Jan 05 without my husband and was amazed by how many other seniors were on board the ship - quite a few without any children on board. I thought I was going to babysit, but soon learned they were so busy I was on my own a good part of the time. There was plenty to do and many wonderful people to talk with. I'm going again on the Repo Cruise and bringing grandpa this time.

Thanks for the reply. And YES, he will be with 10 grandchildren, ages 5 to 21. So I'm hoping they will also give him things to fill his time.

Dont forget about the wine and cheese tasting events. The art of entertaining was great. Lots of good food to taste after the demonstrations too. YUMMY. We have run across the seniors only social meet and greet on the 7 day cruises to get to know other seniors on the trip.
There is always something to do. if he likes music, the Promenade lounge has easy listening music on and off all day and evening too. There is a small dance floor there too. The internet cafe if he likes to go on line is there too. There are lots of board games in that lounge too, for all ages. The ESPN club always has some kind of sporting events on the many TV's in that lounge, snacks are always available too. Lots of MALE socializing goes on in that lounge all day long. Bridge and galley tours are day events too. The best legs contest is a great one too. It's not quite what it sounds like.
The navigator is filled with all kinds of stuff. Just be bold and try something new.
Hope you have a great time,

I am off on a 3 day Bahamas cruise soon...wahooo! I wondered if they had the lectures related to Disney on these cruises? I'm writing my dissertation on Disney so it would be really useful.
(My question is a little off topic for this thread but for some reason I can't post new threads.)

Frankly, my dad did so much on sea days b/w the lecture series, the tastings and the grandkids, that he was TIRED by the end of the day! On our last day at sea, he said "I gotta NOT doing things and get away from you people for a while" and went to the Quiet Cove and had a cigar and drink and came back one happy grandpa (that we then scuttled off to the next activity).
