What is the story with the Snow White pins?

Where did they come from? Why are there so many? Why do people not want them but then will pay $59.00 on ebay for Grumpy? What do all the CM do with them?

Those pins were originally in a set for purchase at wholesale clubs.

Recently I saw the dwarf pins for sale on a website. A grab bag of hundreds of them for very cheap. I would venture a guess to say that this is why they are on so many lanyards.
