We have a reservation at BLT using BLT points. I asked about if there was availability at BLT could we reallocate SSR points. I was told I would have to cancel and rebook, but there isn't anything for our dates anyway.
You can only book at resorts you own 8 - 11 months out, and only up to the number of points you own at that resort (plus any you bank or borrow). That is the advantage of owning at your home resort, and why people will encourage others to buy where they want to stay.
At 7 months, the booking window opens up for everyone. If you call in at 7 months, the only way you can "shift" your reservation points from one contract to the other is if that reservation is available to the general public. In essance, they are cancelling your current reservation, and rebooking with new points. They do this to be fair to those with home resort advantage, and also to maintain balance among all of the
DVC resorts.
BUT I have a waitlist at BCV and requested using SSR points if those dates come thru. That seems ok.
At 7 months, any DVC member can book at any resort. That's why it isn't a problem to use your SSR points to waitlist BCV. What I don't know (that maybe someone else could answer) is if you have a current reservation at BLT using BLT points, can you waitlist at BLT using your SSR, and if it comes through, have them cancel the BLT reservation with BLT points? That may be an option for you without having to cancel your existing reservation.
They would use the SSR points and then shorten my days at BLT and return the points to my account. Why would I have to cancel and rebook at BLT, but at BCV it would be booked and then canceled the days at BLT?
Technically speaking, any time you have an existing reservation and want to book somewhere else, you are cancelling and rebooking. Had you called in and the BLT reservation been available, they would have used your SSR points to book it, and then turned around and cancelled your reservation using BLT points. The problem was, the reservation was not available. Same premise with BCV. If it opens up, they will use your SSR points to book it. Once that reservation is booked, they'll go back and cancel the days you told them to off of your BLT reservation (which is using your BLT points).
Also I was told if I wanted the waitlist until 31 days, I could use SSR points, but if I wanted until 7 days, then I would have to use BLT points?????? Is this something new, or a mistaken CM? Is doesn't make sense to me.
I think what the CM was trying to explain is you can waitlist for any resort up to 31 days before your vacation starts. At 31 days out, you have to call back in and tell them you want to stay on the waitlist. If that reservation comes through, they will honor it with your SSR points, and cancel your BLT reservation. However, at 7 days out, if the reservation does not come through, you're pretty much stuck with the reservation you have (at BLT using BLT points). At 7 days out, you can call in daily, but the likelihood of something opening up 7 days out is highly unlikely.
Hope that helps explain it. It's just how the system is set up, but fortunately, a lot of people on the boards have good luck with waitlisting!
