What is the deal with the expensive mutts?

I wonder why there aren't kitten mills and shady cat breeders? At least I never hear about such things.

We went into a rare mall pet shop tonight and just about all they had was mixed breed dogs. It was interesting because most of them were about $80 so I'm not really sure what that was all about.

I don't care, I just go in to look at the lizards usually.

With people being better about fixing their dogs...there are probably a lot fewer "mutts." It is a lot harder now to find cheap puppies except big lab or pitbull mixes at the pound.

Sometimes ppl don't want dogs that can be identified as a breed or don't want the problems associated with a certain breed.

Perhaps the cost is to make it profitable for legitimate breeders to meet a need.

I think 1k is nothing to spend on a dog considering the lifetime costs of owning a pet. I had no idea when we got our dog how much stuff would add up to. It would have been cheaper to have a kid!

It does seem silly...but if there is a market!

I have a mix breed cat that is mixed so wonderfully (siamese and ragdoll) that I'd pay 1k easy to get another one!

He was cheap though...just the $50 to cover shots and first vet.

I'd love a ragdoll or a Maine Coone cat but I really love all cats and would take any of them. It's funny but I think a lot more about breed when it comes to dogs.

Yah...we had no idea what a great cat ours would turn out to be.

I love the ragdoll...he is just one big floopy ball of fur that never gets mad at anything. We will probably get a ragdoll next time cuz I love how soft and snuggly they are. They LOVE to be handled and don't go hide like other cats I've had. He has no pride or shame, lol.

I like the fact that he is mixed with siamese too, cuz I think he is more intelligent because of it.

Or, I might rescue a kitty, like I did this one. The pounds here have TONS of nice cats.

People keep saying go to the pound for a dog, but we perused the pound for months. Lots of pitbulls, chows and labs.....or senior dogs. No small dogs at all.

My aunt had daisy dogs years ago I think she sold them for 50dollars, they were some sort of poodle mixture,,,, now years later ive seen them for like 500 and up
I kind of believe that there can be problems with the purebreeds, my samoyed fantasia had epielpsy and my samson died in his sleep at 6.
While my supposed to be pure breed but no papers(and I think he is part eskimo and his personality is not like my other sammies)samoyed pinocchio keeps going and going.
I really want to get another samoyed I contacted a breeder and she wants 800, I think I would pay that because I love the breed so much but I think its way too much samson was only 400.
My cockatoo cost a lot but to me shes worth millions
I think some people buy the expensive dogs just for show in tell, for me with my sammies it pure love of the breed and the sammie personality that comes with being purebreed.

About 5 years ago we rescued a pure breed Boxer, smartest dog I have ever met in person.

Her name is Karma, sometimes she is GOOD KARMA and sometimes she is BAD KARMA.

Now would I pay $1000 for any dog mix or not? NO, cuz we already dread having to part with Karma.

But I did donate $500 to the shelter that helped us rescue the Karma.

I know I will need a flame suit for this post I am about to make . I cant see paying money for mixed dogs when you can go to the shelter and save a life. You can get pure bred dogs there and from rescue .
I have a weenier dog that is cute and he was free the lady who gave him to me with his papers grew bored with him after spending 800.00 on a toy doxie .

I work at a emergency vet clinic and I cant tell you the number of people who come in with thier $1,800.00 special Puggle or Labradoodle. I agree that all animals deserve a good home but I know for a fact that there are "Puggles" at the shelter here in town . They will take donations if you just feel like you need to spend $1,800.00 on a puppy : )

I will now crawl away and get my suit on . I do LOVE dogs though or I wouldnt do what I do .

We have seen quite a few!
The problem is, people do not know what they are doing!
Yes, most people breed for the MONEY!
We just had someone come in the clinic yesterday with a beautiful yellow lab.
She has not had a heat cycle in 10 months. We asked him about getting her spayed. He said, "My wife wants to get rid of her if we can't breed her."
HMMM....I thought.....if wife can't get pregnant will HE dump HER?
