What is the avg rental car running these days?

We got great discounts back in 2002 thru National but nothing looks great this year. Granted it is way early (Christmas 2004) but I believe in beginning to track prices early. Also, I figured it would be more expensive since it's a holiday week, but the rates are all over the place! Budget gave an estimated $171 whereas National came in at $414!! What the heck is up with that? Do people actually rent cars for that kind of money? I may go ahead and reserve thru Budget and see if anything better ever pops up. We like National because of Emerald Club/EA but not $400 worth!

Any thoughts appreciated.

It is way early, keep your eye on the rates ( I somehow know you will). I would grab the Budget, however.
