What is the 3 or 4 gift Christmas rhyme?

Speaking of Christmas shopping, I was thinking about this rhyme the other day and could not remember it. We are trying to cut back on gifts for the kids. Mostly because I have a shopping problem and go way over board. I am trying to stick to 3 or 4 gifts from us, one from Santa (even for the 17 yr old), and a family gift like a zoo membership or trip or something.

I know it said something about something you want, need and read. Is that all there is to it?

Maybe your kids are older, but I am curious how this all fits in with "Santa." My kids are younger and they commented to me that their

I don't know about the rhyme but I grew up with the utter belief that since Santa had to get gifts for every child in the world that he had a very strict budget...each child got X amount worth of stuff (don't remember how much) but me and my brother were set down in the floor with sales papers, sears christmas catalog, and jcpenny Christmas catalog; a pad of paper and a pencil. We learned from an early age how to budget our money and want vs afford. I thought it was the most fun part of Christmas after opening presents lol trying to figure out how to get the best bang for my buck but I guess that is why I have a great time couponing, saving and budgeting.

My kids are a bit spaced. LOL... DS is 17 so totally gets the whole budget thing. DD is only 3 so she only knows that Santa exists. I guess I will figure out as we go. We have other Christmas traditions though like going to Build A Bear.

I have been telling my kids all year that we are transitioning to this starting this year, and they are fine with it. Santa always brings only one item for each child in our house, so they will still get that one item from Santa.

We have always told our children that Santa does not bring/make electronics. Santa brings three, reasonably priced gifts. We decided on three because the Wisemen brought three gifts to Baby Jesus. Any other gifts come from Mom and Dad. Thus, we get full credit or blame if the latest, greatest electronics are under the tree.
