On a lot of the menus I see brocolli slaw, cranberry slaw, liberty slaw and, coming from the UK, it's not a food I've ever come across :confused3

Could anyone explain to me what slaw is?

Thankyou! :)

Slaw is a salad usually made from shredded cabbage with a mayonaise or vinegar based dressing. Many different ways to make it.

well my favorite veggietype salad thingy. If you have an opportunity to visit a Cracker Barrell or Chick Fil A next time you are in the states, you should give the slaw a try either place. The Tropical Slaw at THe Crystal Palace in the MK is also fantastic. I could have made a meal off of this alone.

"Cole"slaw is basically a salad made from shredded cabbage and can be vinegar based or mayonnaise based. It usually also has shredded carrots. Slaw doesn't have to be made primarily from cabbage...another popular type of slaw is broccoli slaw which is made from shredded broccoli, with carrots also I believe. Just think of shredded veggies or fruits mixed with some type of dressing...thats a "SLAW"

In the South, we also have hot slaw. Made from cabbage, carrots, jalapenos, and mustard. Yummy!!!! Great on hot dogs, BBQ and burgers.

P.S. Love your GWTW picture! I'm a huge fan.

I always think of it as meaning "shredded" something. So, to me a "slaw" is any type of shredded vegetables. It doesn't necessarily mean anything about dressing, although most salads have dressing, so I would always inquire about that. ("cole slaw" does however, nearly always mean shredded cabbage tossed with a dressing of some sort)

I guess I think this because I see them selling bags of "Broccoli slaw" etc at the grocery store these days, and those bags of the raw shredded veggies don't have dressing on them--so slaw must only mean the "shred" part. <shrug>

Thankyou for the information everyone! Typical me that I didn't put together that cole slaw = slaw!
