what is needed to get the motorized scooters?

My grandma is 76 and has arthritic knees, so she can't handle all the walking of the parks, so I was wondering what you need to do to get a scooter. Thanks!

There are also companies that specialize in wheelchair rentals that will deliver a wheelchair/ECV to your resort to use throughout your stay.

You may want to rent one from one of the offsite companies so she will have it all the time. The ECV's at the parks are first come/first serve. My mother rented one from Walker Mobility and was very glad she did. It can be a long walk from the bus stop to the park entrance.

To directly answer your question: All you need to do to get a scooter is pay for it. You don't need to prove any type of disability or need. There is more information about scooter rentals over on the DisAbilities Board. You may want to look there

I don't remember my FIL having to have anything when he got them for my MIL.

I will 2nd what Caroline Blue said about renting from somewhere else. We rented from an outside company in 2004 and it was great. Since we were on the 2nd floor of Old Key West we were able to leave it at the front desk for charging and retrieve it every morning. This past May we didn't do that and just tried to get them at the front gate everyday and somedays we weren't able to get one until well into the afternoon.

you can also rent one off site that they will deliver too and pick up from your resort if you think that would help her. My mom rented one and it was 175 for the week from walker mobility they are recommended on the dis disabilities section.

We've used Walker Mobility several times for my 74 y/o mom and they're great. They take your credit card number when you book, but your card is not charged until the night before you arrive. When you arrive, just go to luggage services and your scooter will be waiting for you with your name on it. On your last day, just drop it off at luggage services and the ECV company will pick it up. I would definitely rent one from offsite. If she needs one everyday, it will be cheaper plus the offsite ones are smaller and easier to maneuver. That way she will also have it to get around the resort and from the bus stops into the parks. Also with a scooter she will be loaded onto the buses first, so will always be guaranteed a seat (as will all of her party). Also there are only so many ECVs at the parks, so if you arrive late she may not have one available for her.

No proof of medical necessity is needed to rent an ECV, if that's what you were asking.

There is information about renting at the parks and also about renting from off-site places (including phone numbers and web links for placed DIS posters recommend). As was already mentioned, you don´t need any 'proof' to rent one.
Many people chose to rent one from one of the off-site places because they are smaller and easier to drive, less expensive and you know you will have one for both in the parks and at the resort.
If she hasn´t used one before, it would be good to get some practice in before venturing out in the parks. She should be comfortable going straight, stopping quickly and turning in both directions when going in forward and reverse. She can try them out in stores like grocery stores or Target. If she can drive one of those big ones with shopping carts attached, the WDW ones should be easy.
