What is Everyone's Opinion of the Fort Wilderness Cabins???

Hi Everyone,

What is your opinion about the Fort Wilderness Cabins? Are they convenient? Do the buses to and from Fort Wilderness work effectively? Your opinion of the over all resort?
Any input would be greatly appreciated....good and bad.

While I haven't stayed there yet, I've heard lots of good things. A couple trip reports (do a search on the trip reports board) I read were VERY positive. The Disney Magazine had a big story about them not too long ago and it sounded great too. I wouldn't consider it camping either, but over on the camping board you'll probably find lots more info.

We,ve stayed at the cabins a few times. They are really great. It definately isn't camping as they have full maid service. If you want some extra space and a kitchen to maybe have breakfast , keep drinks and snacks or maybe really cook you can't do better than here. We've always had our own car, parked conviently at our door so I can't help with the bus situation. Thay also have some good deals on the cabins we stayed ther last christmas for @139 per night. They're definately worth looking into.

The pro's the cabin are nice and quiet and I have stayed there 2 times. We never did hear anything from our neighbors. Make sure you request to be near a pool and the bus stop. This resort is really spread out. It offers plenty to do. Our daughter caught her first fish there. Having a kitchen for at least breakfast is nice also.
Another plus is that it will sleep 6 people.

Cons If you are going mainly to MK/ Epcot this is a good resort. The bus to Animal Kingdom leave from this resort also. Even though the internal buses run regulary it can take some time if you have to change buses at the TTC. That is the only negative thing about this resort. You hurry up just to wait for your connection to the other parks.

We were in one in June and loved it. We took the transporatation to MK and drove verywhere else.

We stayed in the FW cabins about 3 years ago, and we loved it. It was so nice to leave the hustle and bustle of the parks and go back to the campground in the middle of the woods. It was very quiet. We also never heard any of our neighbors. The cabins are pretty close together, but there is a lot of vegetation in between that makes them feel secluded. The only downside to staying there is having only one bathroom. I have 5 daughters and having more than one bathroom is almost a necessity now!

The cabins are nice, located in heavily wooded area and in "loops" --u-shaped areas having about 40 or so cabins each. You can park right at your cabin and you have a large back porch. There is a pool nearby (just regular pool, not main FW pool for which you need to take bus) and a bus stop outside the loop. That is for the internal bus that takes you to places to catch other busses or boat to MK, thus using Disney transport it takes two to get any where (internal bus and then external one); that can be a quite slow process particularly during morning or park closing rushes. Thus, recommend you have a car and use it to go anywhere but MK (use the boat to get there).

Inside the cabins are fairly small, only about 510 sq ft or no more than the size of two All Star rooms. The bedroom has a full and bunks and and a sink. There is not much room to move around in the bedroom. The living room has a pull down double and when pull down there is hardly any room left in that living room. The kitchen is small but fully equiped. Though they sleep six, I consider them ideal for 4 and a tight fit for 6. You can rent golf carts to get around the resort (which is very spread out) and to external bus station. However, you must order those in advance and price is about what it would take to get a rental car.

They weren't for our family....We made ressies for a week 4 years ago and only ended up staying 2 nights....

I booked it because of the kitchen and room for 6 people. But once their we didn't really enjoy the in the woods feel. We found out that we are really more hotel type of people. I wanted a pool with themeing. We couldn't figure out how to get any where..we had a car and wanted to drive to certain places but as I remember we couldn't do it.

Any how I called CRO and said that it wasn't the disney experience that I wanted and could I change resorts...they were very accomodating and ended up moving us the BWV...we ended up purchasing DVC by the end of the vacation.

While most people I heard love it ...it just wasn't the resort for us...

First the good:

Beautiful, remote, quiet, full kitchen, lots of room, and lots of stuff to do at the resort itself.

The bad: (in my opinion)

There is a seperate bus system within the resort itself, that can be a little confusing. The resort is spread out, and getting to the store and other areas you either walk, alot, or rent a golf cart. If you are used to camping it is great, if you are looking for a resort experience with more sophistication, you might want to consider something else.

Overall, we enjoyed it, but you have to decide for yourself if the themeing is right for you.

Do they "feel" like trailers?

They didn't feel like trailers to us. My family of 6 enjoyed staying here. The kids enjoyed spotting the animals and the feel of staying in a log cabin. The adults enjoyed the quietness and the very comfortable murphy bed.

We also had a rental car while we were here. I think this is the only way to go if you are like me - the commando park type.

Kind of. They have some really beautiful rustic furntiure and decor in the rooms that makes it feel authentic. But it is a trailer. How much time are you going to be spending in the room?

Would it be unrealistic to think you could stay at the Wilderness Lodge, and spend a lot of time a Fort Wilderness for say the Hayrides, campfire, Hoop-di-Doo, and Water Pageant? Or would it be a lot of trouble? Does the Boat go from one to the other, or would you have to make the whole loop to MK, CR etc.?

Samsma - that's exactly what we did last December and what we will do again this year. We love staying at the Wilderness Lodge because of the wonderful theme, architecture, restaurants, Christmas decorations, etc. However, we do enjoy some of the activities at Fort Wilderness - like the campfire, hayride, carriage ride, Mickey's BBQ, petting zoo and stables, etc. We have always found it really easy to get back and forth. There is a nice walking/bike trail running between the lodge and the campground. In fact we rented bikes and rode over to Fort Wildrenss several times - and we definately are not expert bikers or in the best physical condition. It was an easy ride. We walked it several times, too. It was very pleasant and shaded. There is also a boat running back and forth between the WL and FW. We never found it a problem getting back and forth between the two. I felt like we had the best of both worlds. We did check out the cabins, but we felt they weren't really for us. We would have missed all the theming and luxury of the lodge. Plus, we wouldn't have used the kitchen because I'm not about to cook on vacation!

You don't need to go to Fort Wilderness to see the water pageant, though. It stops in front of the Wilderness Lodge, too. In fact, we had a perfect view of it from our WL balcony. You can also go down and watch it from the WL boat dock.

To us the cabins in FW are the best. We have stayed in them many times. The thing I like best is even though we eat out you are not living out of a cooler.You can keep soda & snacks without having to keep getting ice. You can get up and eat breakfast while another person is getting showered. This actually SAVES time because you dont have to go eat breakfast after everyone is ready to go. Also most kids would rather have their cereal than go out to breakfast.
The next big plus is you are not watching TV in bed, you have a sofa to sit on.
We also consider a golf cart a must which is only about $40.00 a night. Add this to your room rate & you are still under a deluxe resort price for a room only. The golf carts are so much fun and make getting around the campground very convienent. You can leave them at the marina all day while you are at the parks.
There is a petting zoo, campfire sing along & outside Disney movies at night. All for free! You can see the MK fireworks from the beach and the Electric Water Pagent goes right by.
The only down side to the campground would be it is not as plush as the hotel resorts.
I could go on forever, "Try it You'll like it" !
