What is Better Cozumel or Costa Maya?

What is there to do at Cozumel and Costa Maya? Which is better and why. Are the dolphins at Cozumel great, and are the ruins at Costa Maya more intresting please tell me.

Costa Maya was our favorite port! We took a cab to Mahahual (10 min?) and spent the day playing on the beach, getting massages ($20/40 min) and THE best margaritas I've ever had! My (then 14yr old) LOVED mahahual---VERY authentic mexican culture. We were in Coz the next day. We walked around town and did a little shopping. It was a fun "girls" day. They may be close geographically but worlds apart, as for tourism.

I'm anxious to return to CM, when they re-open to cruise's...I only hope it will be as beautiful as before DEAN. Unfortunately, there is no way to know.

Please consider giving it a try. The locals were totally dependent on tourism...with the hurricane closing the pier, they will need our support.

The port at Costa Maya was built for the cruise ships, so you need to get past that to see the real (i.e. more undeveloped) Mexico. Cozumel is very touristy, with lots of restaurants, shops, and resorts. I went to Costa Maya and Cozumel on a Royal Caribbean cruise 3 years ago. I did a tour of the Chacchoben Ruins wirh Ivan and David that was wonderful: www.chacchobenruins.com I made no plans for Cozumel, which was a mistake. I did a bit of shopping, then went back to the ship. I had originally planned to go to Tulum, but cancelled it because I was "ruined" out!

for those who have been to Costa Maya, did you need to get vaccinated against malaria?

I didn't get vaccinated in part because I didn't think about it, and also because CM was a last minute port added after hurricane damage put Grand Cayman off from our cruise. I was not able to give blood for a year following our trip because CM is on the malaria list for the Red Cross.

we loved the ruins at Chocchoben. In Cozumel, we love to go to Paradise Beach and have a nice relaxing beach day.

Can you explain about the vaccination for malaria? As far as I knew, all that is available against malaria are daily pills--that are amazingly expensive.
