someone posted in the thread about the flu going around MCO that they were goin to be taking "Airborne' all week,

what is it where do i get it and can my kids take it!

thanks!

It's an herbal supplement - you can get it at Wal-Mart. You take it "at the first sign of a cold symptom or before entering crowded environments" (from the package). It's a tablet you dissolve in a cup of water - I like the lemon lime flavor myself. Yes, your kids can take it - kids can take half a tablet, or they now sell it in a children's dose - but it's more economical by far to just cut the adult ones in half. Their website is AirborneHealth. (I don't have enough posts to post the preceding and ending letters - but that should get you there!) I don't know if it really works or not, but I always feel like I'm at least trying something!
Hope this helps!

THANKS VERY MUCH!!! I am off to check out the website. :O)

DH swears by Airborne. If me or the kids start to catch a cold that man sprints to the medicine cabinet to break out the Airborne and take some.

If you do not find it at your local drugstore you can get it online from Drugstore.com

I recently bought it at Walmart. I'm not sure if it really works, but I will give it a try on our upcoming trip.

Over the weekend the Airborne website was offering a free sample packet & coupons - I signed up for both. Is Cold-Eeze an herbal supplement like Airborne? I saw them being sold side by side at a grocery store.

I absolutely swear by this stuff! :thumbsup2

I always have it on hand between Sept-May!!! My girls haven't used it yet (ages 4 and 6) but I can't say enough good things about it! :)

We always use it when flying.
It now comes in grapefruit flavor which I like the best.
It is now also sold in the BIG size at Costco :rotfl: That's how I buy it as DH travels a lot.

Be careful with Airborne, especially if you're giving it to your kids. You really have to watch the dosage, as the quantities of vitamins in Airborne are very high, several times the RDA, and can be toxic if you take too much of it (as it says on their website). And nobody really knows if some of those herbal supplements are safe for children. Remember, herbal supplements are not regulated by the FDA, and many have not been thoroughly tested in children.

Personally, I'd never give it to a child without talking to my pediatrician first.

This stuff is a SCAM.

It has no curitive value. It actually says so right on the package.

It was developed by a grade school teacher.
It is marketed this way as though this is some sort of positive thing.

Now, you must ask yourself, "How the heck would a grade-school teacher know how to put together a "cold remedy"?

If you want to take it, it will likely do no harm.

Just remember, the "placebo effect" is very powerful, but not very curative.

It's mostly vitamin C, and your body won't absorb all of it.

Take your daily multi vitamin with your daily allowance of C and you'll do just as well.

I was trying to think of a kinder, gentler way to get this point across, but sometimes the direct approach is best. :lmao:

It's patent medicine. If people want to throw away their money on this stuff and feel like it helps them, fine. But the trouble with all of these supplements is that they are completely unregulated by the government. Nobody tests any of this stuff. Any 'scientific' studies they mention in their marketing materials were conducted or funded by the company, and are therefore garbage. Therefore, there's just no way to know if any of it is safe. And I've read one too many articles about people who need liver transplants, etc., because they took some supplement that was never properly tested on humans.

Herbal remedies tend to scare me, too. Especially with the kids. I figure hand washing is much less risky and works great!

Versus say ibuprofen and other NSAIDS which conservatively only hospitalize 107,000 people per year and kill over 16,000. Government regulators (FDA) are people who are on the boards and payrolls of the companies submitting this stuff for "regulation". Hmmm, Vioxx(tm) is safe for pain and passes FDA regulation. Oops sorry you died from a cardiac arrest. Oh sorry lets now remove it. Some "science".

Here are the Airborne herbals below (not including the regular vitamins and minerals that are in everyday food)people if you want to do your own diligence and don't ask your medical doctor. They are not trained in nutrition. Ask your pharmacist, they will know more about any interactions with any other medicine or health problems/questions you will have. Or look them up on your own: Oh and the majority of modern pharmaceuticals are derivatives of plants that have only been used for centuries. I really don't need to do a chemistry lecture right now.

Maltodextrin
Lonicera
Forsythia
Schizonepeta
Ginger
Chinese Vitex
Isatis Root
Echinacea
Beet Root

To the other contributer. There are no curatives. There are pharmaceutical suppressants (suppress a cough symptom, suppress a histamine cell releaser, etc. and there are nutritional/vitamin/herbal immunity boosters (boost the release of killer white cells to increase phagocytosis of the bad bacteria, etc) and there are plenty of clinical pharmacology papers to back up the use of both.

And no one says you can't use both together to try to decrease the days of suffering.

Best of travelling and health to you all.

Don't be sorry, be careful (in what you say/write and do).

and government regulation :rotfl:

Some members of my family use Airborne and swear by it, but I am just as wary as some of the above posters. I'm learning about herbal supplments right now in one of my classes, and the scary part is that since they are not regulated by the FDA, they don't have to say exactly what is in the product. This means that there could be all sorts of other stuff in there that isn't listed, or the ingredients that are listed might NOT be in there.

While I don't really think Airborne is trying to hurt anyone since it is so popular now, I just have to ask how people think it truly works...if you're supposed to take it at the first sign of a cold, and then you don't get sick, how do you know you were really getting sick?

OR, if you take it and get sick, do you just tell yourself that you took it too late? :rotfl:

I think the whole premise is quite funny. I'll stick to getting my vitamins the natural way, through yummy fruits and veggies.

I think this stuff works but I also think if you took the same vitamins youd probably get the same results. Just because something says FDA approved doesnt mena its safe, i think some of you and most of america has a false sense of security with the whole fda thing. Theres a lot better things taht work, herbal and stuff that are not fda or any other govenrmental body and not only work better but are much healthier(better?) for you than all the drugs your doctor is prescribing. I for one would rahter put an herb or other more natural remedy into my body than some drug that has upteenth side effects to cure one thing but oh yeah you also need to take this to combat that side efffect.

Hand washing doesnt also work like somebody suggested, while it may help its really not all that effective. I wash my hands all the time but still get just as sick as the person in my office that doesnt. Im sure id be sicker if i didnt but i wouldtn trust not getting sick tojust hand washing, I think that if you are skeptical you need to go do your own research about the products and not leave it up to some agency to tell u its ok for you or not.

"Hand washing doesnt also work like somebody suggested, while it may help its really not all that effective."

There are many studies that prove that it DOES work, if you do an internet search. There is a right way and a wrong way to wash, by the way. Having worked in doctors offices and hospitals for many years, I was lucky to learn the right way early on.

In my own home....since becoming strict with hand-washing 2 years ago, my kids have not been sick once. Not even the sniffles.

Hand washing is not the solution to not getting sick tho, while it helps its not the end all its proclaimed to be.

When your body has more Vitamin C than it can absorb, you'll get diarrhea.
That's as bad a reaction as anyone should get. Just cut back on the dosage. We swear by Vitamin C as a cure all around our house-that and aspirin. As y'all can see, we believe in cutting edge medicine!! :goodvibes
