I saw this when trying to do some online shopping and I have to say I have never seen or heard of this before so there are questions:

What is this, I mean I can read the label but that doesn't do it justice, what is it really? Who uses it? What is it used for? What is that glob of stuff on the label? America's favorite????

Lol!! The "glob" of stuff on the label is a cream cheese based cheese ball, with shredded dried beef on the outside.

Shredded dried beef is also what's used in white gravy over toast to create the delicacy known as "**** on a shingle." (Think similar to "stuff" on a shingle.)

It may be a Midwestern thing. I've only seen it used shredded, personally. It really is tasty, though.

East Coast here - we have that in our stores, I'm in my 50's and I've seen it in the grocery store my whole life...same thing in the can be found in a pkg in the cooler area, with the premade cream chipped beef. Or as @dizneegirl and my Grandfather so eloquently put it, S.O.S!

It's what you make creamed chip beef out of, or different types of appetizers (hence the cheese ball on the front of the jar) and what not with.

How is it there is an entire food option I have never seen before? It sounds popular, like I should have seen it in a Cracker Barrel or a diner in Pennsylvania where I was introduced to scrapple and purple pickled eggs.

I'm in the North East and have never seen this or come across creamed beef or chipped beef. Is that white sauce like mac and cheese sauce but with beef instead of macaroni? Or is it like a horseradish sauce? I'm struggling to bring it into the familiar, the S on a shingle nickname is making me thinking it might belong in the scrapple family:rotfl2:

Not really sure what to make of the photos I am seeing.... it looks.... ummm... unique.

I remember that stuff! In the 70s it would be used for a type of cheese ball with crackers and/or veggies. You could also use it for chipped/creamed beef on toast ("stuff" on a shingle, as you may have heard it referred to).

I would call this a top-tier shelf-stable beef and/or pork product we ate a lot more of them we should have growing up. These would include deviled ham, Vienna sausage and potted meat. I can't even believed we used to eat that stuff, especially the last 2 :shudder: .

I have had it before not terrible but not my go to snack. I like a lot of regional stuff like Scrapple but I bet a lof of the people down south have never had or seen it. We also have Head cheese here which is similar but I think it tastes different

I had a recipe with this for a dip once -- never made it again, because it didn't taste worthy of the dear cost of the jar of beef (and I think the recipe called for 2 jars).

I see a lot of people equating creamed chipped beef & SOS. My Dad loved CCB, so mom would serve it over toast a few times a year. When I met DS, he introduced me to SOS. His Dad made it homemade from a recipe he learned in the Army. They weren't even similar. Apparently, there are two different versions of SOS.

Hmmmm. Interesting in our family they are one and the same, served over toast &/or potatoes. Now I’m interested to find out what SOS means to others if not cream chipped beef.

My FIL's version used ground beef. The gravy was made by adding flour, milk, salt & pepper to the beef grease. He also served it over toast.
